About the Author

David M. Beazley has been programming Python since 1996. While working at Los Alamos National Laboratory, he helped pioneer the use of Python with scientific computing software. Through his company, Dabeaz LLC, he provides software development, training, and consulting related to the practical use of dynamic programming languages such as Python, Ruby, and Perl, especially in systems programming. He is author of all previous editions of Python Essential Reference, and was contributing author of Steve Holden’s Python Web Programming.� He is a member of the Python Software Foundation.

Probably the best "second book" on Python

David Beazley's "Python Essential Reference, Fourth Edition" covers Python 2.6 and 3.0, and is thus quite (though not completely) up to date. The author has in essence chosen to present the intersection of the two branches, i.e. omit features of Python 2 that have been removed from Python 3. This volume's pace is rapid and the coverage is quite extensive, so this probably shouldn't be the first Python book one reads.

The Good: this book is approximately 700 pages long; even so, it's not that bulky and is therefore quite manageable. It is split into two parts: 200 pages on the language and roughly 400 pages on the library. The first part is very good, while the second part is unrivaled as of this writing (though this may change when Doug Hellmann's "The Python Standard Library by Example" comes out). Thus, the reader essentially gets two books for the price of one: the part on the language can be read linearly, while the library part can be read in chunks as the need arises. The book also includes an extremely useful Index which is approximately 80 pages long (and also contains unexpected entries, e.g. "chicken, multithreaded, 414"). Moving on to the material covered: Beazley includes an appendix on Python 3-specific concepts, but also offers useful advice on Python 3 throughout the main text (e.g. "To keep your brain from exploding, encoded byte strings and unencoded strings should never be mixed together in expressions"). I particularly enjoyed the sections on decorators, generators, and coroutines in the chapter on functional programming. Beazley has also posted on his website two tutorials on these topics that nicely complement the material in the book. Similarly, the chapter on multiprocessing and threading is impressive, and forms a nice set with the author's talk slides on the Global Interpreter Lock -- it's important to note that Beazley used to be a professor of Computer Science. Probably the most significant aspect of this book is the abundance of examples. I'm pretty sure the phrase that is most often repeated in this volume is "Here's an example". The examples are always enlightening, sometimes clever, but never obfuscating. Finally, the writing may not be flawless but overall it is quite good. Of course, any reference text is bound to be somewhat dry, but within the confines of the genre Beazley has truly done wonders: he has a personality and he's not afraid to show it. This jovial aspect of the writing is present when giving advice (e.g "Try not to mix threads and multiprocessing together in the same program unless you're vastly trying to improve your job security", p. 435), or just for its own sake (e.g. "If you change the code to only poll after every six-pack of beer", p. 469)

The Bad: chapter 1 is fun to read but it is deceptively titled ("A Tutorial Introduction"). For example, Beazley uses a decorator and the seek file method, without explaining anything about either of them. Of course, this book isn't supposed to be introductory, so strictly speaking my quibble is with the first chapter's title, not its content. The biggest problem I encountered while reading the book was the page layout in the majority of Part II: a module is introduced and then its methods are described by showing a name in bold, followed by a description on a separate line. This confused me to no end: whenever I saw a name, for a split second I would wonder if I should look up or down to find the description. This could have been avoided if the more standard tabular form had been chosen more often: name on one column, description on the other. Of course, I understand that this would have increased the size of the book considerably, perhaps prohibitively so. Moving on to more detailed complaints: for some modules (e.g. struct, shutil, os.path) Beazley gives a listing of the contents but, unfortunately, no corresponding examples. To be fair, he does use os.path functionality in a number of places throughout the book (though the index is no help tracking them down), just not in the appropriate section. Delving into even more detail: any book of this breadth is bound to contain minor errors. Here's a selection of such slips, all drawn from the same chapter: in some cases the prose is obscure, e.g. "A method is a function that performs some sort of operation on an object when the method is invoked as a function." (p. 33); sometimes a statement is contradicted in a later chapter, e.g. we read on p. 39 that "Sequences represent ordered sets of objects indexed by non-negative integers and include strings, lists, and tuples." only to find out on p. 68 that "Negative indices can be used to fetch characters from the end of a sequence."; similarly, on p. 45 we read that for dictionary methods like keys() "in Python 3 the result is an iterator that iterates over the current contents of the mapping", while on p. 632 we learn that "these methods return so-called view objects".

These days, the aspiring intermediate Python programmer doesn't have too many books to choose from: Martelli/Ravenscroft/Ascher's "Python Cookbook" is out of date, Ziade's "Expert Python Programming" contains too much material that is not Python-specific, and Alchin's "Pro Python" is only ~ 250 pages long. Thus, for the time being Beazley's "Python Essential Reference" is the obvious choice for a second book on Python. All in all, four and a half stars.

An excellent reference to get the maximum out of Python

The author of Python Essential Reference is David Beazley, who among other occupations created the open-source SWIG tool and the WAD mixed-languages debugger. His background is pervading throughout the book, in which the reader gets a clear sense of what is happening behind the Python programming language and learns how to use it efficiently instead of considering it as a black box.

The first 20 pages give an overview of the language and although it is called a "tutorial introduction", it should be understood that its purpose is for a programmer to see what Python looks like, and not for a novice to get their first programming course.

The next 156 pages offer a thorough review of the language and its environment. This is a very interesting part and should not be skipped even by people who already know Python. I said "review" but an experienced programmer should be able to learn the language by reading those chapters and putting them into practice with extra exercises.

Instead of simply describing the language, the author also hands out tricks of the trade, showing how to acquire good coding habits while using an sensible approach regarding the performance, which is often essential in a dynamic language. The fourth edition is focusing on version 2.6 but offers some historical perspective by pointing out several elements that were recently improved, or which are about to change in upcoming versions.

The first part of the book concludes with useful recommendations on program debugging and profiling.

The second part contains 388 pages and goes through the Python library, presenting the essential modules together with examples, notes and advices. After all, this is a reference, so we shouldn't expect any less.

Last but not least, the third part comprises 30 pages of precious information on Python/C interface for extending the language or embedding it in larger applications.

An appendix introduces version 3 for those who are ready to make the leap.

For the sake of completeness, if I were to make any reproach or wish for improvement, it would probably be on the overall presentation (and would be a very minor one). The style in the code excerpts could be more consistent in the first part of the book, and the second part could do with more emphasis on the ... reference ... character of the text, perhaps by providing a more convenient way to navigate through the different modules and by using more obvious styles for the different parts. I sometimes had the impression of reading a long listing of modules and methods instead of looking through a reference book. While the contents is superior to other references like "Python in a Nutshell", I found it easier to retrieve what I needed with the latter - a bit on the brink of obsolescence today - than I do now with the former.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone desirous of improving their programming skills in Python, or having to write optimized code because performance is an issue.

The Best Reference for the Experienced Programmer

I've worked in C, C++, and Java, and for the last six years in Python. This is the book I've been looking for. If you want to know how the language works under the covers and how to best use it, this book is invaluable. The explanation of co-routines and generators is the best I've seen.

The presentation is logical and concise, and the examples are realistic. I've read many Python books, but this is the one that will stay on my desk.

Worth Every Cent If You Want to Know Electronic Warfare. I can't recommend this 442 page tome enough. Of course you will need the EW 101, 102 &103 EW books if you want to fully understand this latest volume by a master writer of engineering electronic warfare lecturer David L. Adamy who is one of the leaders of the 14,000 members of the Society of Old Crows.

decent and worth having... but nothing more

I did find this book extremely useful and have used it as my definitive reference for XQuery while working with real-world problems. The book was not only informative, comprehensive and filled with useful and easy to follow examples, but also realistic. You will find that any of the basic questions you have can be answered somewhere in this book (of course advanced questions often rely on the specific implementation, which is out of scope for the book and I recommend you hit online resources for those).

I do recommend reading/buying/using this book in your day-to-day work with XML in cooperation with an XQuery implementation. It's a little dry of information for advanced readers, but novice to intermediate readers will find it amazingly helpful.

However... this book has one major shortcoming: it is horribly written and organized.

The book seems to be written in a manner where the author knew exactly what they were talking about but didn't take the time to organize it or write a second and third draft. It feels like a "once-and-done" text and is inconsistent with coverage between all the various topics (for example: the structure of simple path queries is discussed sporadically while simple work with sorting and grouping is gone into a level of overkill in detail).

Good book to have on your shelf (just like the little SQL, Vi, Regex, etc. booklets we all have), but you've definitely got to break out the PostIt Notes to make sure you can find the information throughout the book.

It definitely needs more information here and there, but it's a great place to (at the least) start off and look for basic information.

Best XQuery book available to date!

I've had this XQuery book for about a week now and it has already helped me immensely! Priscilla Walmsley (who was a member of the W3C XML Schema Working Group and I believe the XQuery Working Group as well) is an excellent writer and teacher. Her writing style is clear and concise, as anyone who read her earlier Definitive XML Schema book already knows.

"XQuery" is roughly 2/3 tutorial and 1/3 reference (by page counts). The tutorial material is thoughtfully divided into 25 bite-size chapters. The topics progress nicely from an overview and basics to important concepts such as namespace handlng, modules and static typing. The book includes 5 chapters that focus on handling specific data types (e.g, "Working with Strings"). You don't have to know XSLT but knowing XPath may be helpful. OTOH, XPath is covered in Chap. 4. There is even a chapter targeted at SQL users. I also appreciate the carefully chosen running example that is representative of many XML structures. The book also benefits from special icons indicating tips, gotchas, and compatibility issues. Longtime XML geek Simon St.Laurent was the O'Reilly editor, which is another big plus.

Walmsley has also created an incredibly useful reference site of XQuery functions, both those defined by the W3C specs and numerous others that she wrote. Others may contribute as well. [...]

I have several older XQuery books by various publishers but this book is by far the best. I highly recommend it to web developers, database developers, and data architects with even a modest XML background.

First Impressions

My first impression of this book is that it is fantastic. Just flip through the first chapter and you'll see references to code snippets and valuable explanations of XQuery. This book is what I was seeking. The author knows the reader has an interest in the subject and does not waste time explaining what XML is and why one would want to query it etc. This book is not selling the technology. It teaches it which is a lesson the author of "Querying XML" could learn from.

I am very happy thus far with this book.

Hi, I enjoyed reading this book and found the stories while at times a little short were vividly written drawing me in. Not the best Peter Jaggs book I have read but still very worthy of 5 stars.

Get an editor!

Trying to put a positive spin on Pattaya's sex tourism industry is a difficult ask for anyone, despite the author's attempts. He has certainly made a good attempt at justifying his long-term addiction to Thailand's "Sin City", but in the end, this book, as well as his others on the same subject, are obviously just a means for him to earn some more money while he trolls the soi's of Pattaya with his sleazy friends. Instead of purchasing desperate young Isaan women for "short time", he should get a spell check app for his manuscripts.

About the Author
Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

GKC Explained .... and all laid out for you ...

I'm a "study guide, unit study" kind of homeschooling mom. I love it when someone else has found all the links and critical vocabulary words within a book or subject to be studied. I do however almost always "tweak" other's study guides; Nancy Brown's "GKChesterton's The Blue Cross Study Guide" (published by Hillside Education), I don't have to tweak much. Brown has given her reader everything they need for a study of the short story "The Blue Cross" - even the story - in this 90-page study guide.

The study guide includes biographical information about Chesterton. Brown is somewhat of a Chesterton scholar, so her write-up is extensive. She includes references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church to ensure the student understands the Church's teachings on reason.

Brown includes a suggested schedule which takes about 10 days to complete - you of course could make the study of this exceptional short story either longer or shorter. There are essay topics and short-answer questions to help the student delve into the meaning of the story. There are vocabulary words, literary terms , understanding through contextual reading, and other activities to enliven the reader's experience of this first of the Father Brown stories. An answer key is included at the end of the study guide.

I highly recommend this study guide as a great intro to GKC's writings.

Excellent idea, well executed

Nancy Brown has done us a great service, by providing a useful introduction to one of G.K. Chesterton's classic detective stories. Created for students, it is fully annotated and includes great questions for study and discussion, a vocabulary list, and writing prompts. I found it useful for my (adult) Chesterton discussion group, too. The spiral binding is a nice feature. Appropriate for ages 12 and up.

Decent Corporate Finance Text

The most attractive attribute of Miglo's Corporate Finance book is its price. The content itself is so-so. The book covers major topics in corporate finance plus a few special, more advanced topics. Nothing really new here on both fronts.

As an introductory corporate finance text, this book is still a far cry from Brealey, Myers, and Allen's (BMA) Principles of Corporate Finance, which in my opinion is still the best book around in introductory corporate finance. Of course, BMA also costs several multiples of Miglo's book.

In fairness, this book touches upon certain topics that are not usually found in introductory corporate finance textbooks. For example, all the topics that deal with uncertainty, imperfect information, and asymmetric information are not typical in an introductory corporate finance book. However, the discussion of those topics in this book is pretty shallow, as in-depth discussion of those topics should span a couple of courses. Also, there are several books out there that do a better job. For example, three excellent texts that compete in this space are: (1) Copeland, Weston, and Shastri, (2) Amaro de Matos, and (3) LeRoy and Werner.

Weak work from an Academic perspective

I want to write this review simply to suggest to anyone thinking about using this in an academic setting to reconsider...It may be a useful read if you are looking for something in the "teaching students how to critique a work" category, but the bulk of this book is- as he mentions in the foreward, a mix of short-story and travelogue more than detailed anthropological description. The aspects of Trinidadian culture are interesting, but for the most part, the description of uses of Facebook are pretty common and will be familiar and unsurprising, particularly to anyone of student-age.

The actual "anthropological" portion of the book at the very end contains some good discussions about Facebook/social media, but it is maybe only the last third of the book and does not really do a great job of connecting to the research in the first part of the book.

Ultimately, I think this book is too polarized between the world of pop-non-fiction and anthropology to really sit comfortably in either realm. It was an interesting read for me to think about how I would NOT go about writing an anthropological text, but again I would strongly suggest those thinking about using this in a class setting to reconsider....possibly good for an 101-level media or anthro class but otherwise, I would avoid this text.

That said, his writing is not terrible and for those not too academically oriented this is probably a pretty interesting read.

Flawed but interesting study of Facebook usage

These days, it is increasingly hard to escape Facebook, whether or not one is actually signed up to it or not. Even the main news stories carry occasional stories about Facebook, most of them negative. Yet Facebook can also be a force for good, although the good stories don't generally make the headlines. This book is the first serious study that I've read about Facebook. It illustrates the impact through twelve short stories, averaging about twelve pages each, each focusing on an individual, their use of Facebook and how it affected their lives. A thirteenth short story focuses on a food that has its own Facebook fan page.

The thirteen stories are all from Trinidad, a former British colony in the Caribbean whose inhabitants have (it seems) taken Facebook to their hearts. While one may argue about the choice of Trinidad as a research base, it does allow the author to add interest to the book by telling us about various aspects of Trinidad, its people, their life and culture. That said, if you really want to learn about Trinidad, there are plenty of other books devoted to the subject. While Trinidad is very different in many ways from any major industrialized country you care to name, there are enough similarities to make it a viable research base. People still have the same basic needs even though they may express them in different ways.

The first story here focuses on a marriage that might have been in trouble anyway, but Facebook usage destroyed it. Some of the detail may be Trinidadian, but the basic story could easily be British or American. On a more positive note, a man who becomes wheelchair-bound discovers Facebook and finds that he can still communicate with the outside world. I was already aware of the contributions that disabled people make to the internet via blogs; the story here merely confirms that the internet is a godsend to such people.

Another of the stories focuses on one man's devotion to Farmville, one of those addictive games that Facebook is noted for. I didn't get into Farmville, but I spent a lot of time on Zoo World (not mentioned in this book) and eventually suspended my Facebook account to get away from it for a while. That was in January 2011, and I am in no hurry to return. Among other things, I didn't like the way the rules were continually changed, so what had once been fun gradually became irritating. I get the impression that Farmville is a bit like that too, but perhaps not as bad.

Perhaps the scariest story among the twelve is the one about the church that embraced first the internet and later Facebook. They decided that God created the internet, so it was up to the church to use it to spread the word. More interesting to me is the story about the businessman who is worried about the breaking down of the boundaries between business and pleasure. Although it doesn't say so in the book, Facebook doesn't allow us to have more than one account each. There is clearly a need to be able to have separate accounts for different purposes. There are ways round this, either by using privacy setting or by setting up accounts with fake names and addresses, but it would be better to allow openly separate accounts. It's not like Amazon where there are good reasons to disallow multiple accounts.

Following the thirteen short stories, there is an analysis. All of it is opinion and some of it a bit heavy going at times, but this is a serious academic study so is to be expected. I don't agree with it all but in any case, Facebook is still less than a decade old.

One problem I have is that the research looks at Facebook and at real life, but almost completely ignores other internet activity. It is as if the researcher selected people who use the internet only (or mostly) to access Facebook. Some people who use Facebook not only use it as an extension of their real life, but also use it as an extension of their other internet activities.. We can expect better research when Facebook has further matured, but this book offers a good starting point.

It is easy to find fault with this book, but it is also easy to see why some people love it. I am therefore not surprised that it has attracted very divergent opinions regarding its worthiness. I hope that this review tells you enough to help you decide whether this book is for you or not. I loved some of the stories and liked the others, but the analysis was less appealing while the avoidance of the other internet activities was also a negative for me. So it's something of a mixed bag that ends up with three stars, but looked as if it might be better than that based on the early chapters.

A "quickie" academic book

There aren't a lot of books like this: a "quick" academic book that was written and produced quickly (there's no index, no doubt because of its quick schedule). It's no surprise that this isn't a particularly well or deeply argued book. But I think there is some virtue in people daring to write about a new phenomenon like Facebook from a scholarly perspective, even if that scholarly perspective isn't particularly meaty. The book will likely be out of date within a couple of years, but if you're teaching a class on social media or anthropology of media this year or next, it could be productive. The "analytical" chapters coming at the back is a mistake: the chapters that precede them are not interesting enough to stand on their own.

That said, this book seems to have its share of contradictions and missteps. The most glaring is that the author makes the bold and absurd argument that Facebook is "reversing two centuries of flight from community." Really? Hmmm. At the same time, he resists such oversized claims from people who claim that Facebook has the potential to foment democratic revolutions. Why is his own claim any more plausible?

Also, Miller, in favoring the user side of things, is perhaps too quick to dismiss the context that Facebook is: a commercial site that profits from collecting user-generated data (otherwise known as private information). He doesn't want to talk about "corporate" anything, but his perspective seems to me arbitrarily incomplete, especially when he claims to be thinking seriously about privacy.

Superimposition of cephalometric images is the universally used method for demonstrating and evaluating growth and treatment outcomes in the dentofacial complex in individual patients. However, traditional procedures for cephalometric superimposition are based on the use of periosteally located landmarks or their dependant substitutes, which are unstable over time. This renders interpretation of pretreatment-to-posttreatment changes unreliable. The structural method of superimposition, developed and introduced by Arne Björk and based largely on longitudinal implant studies, is the only evidence-based method of superimposition, and it provides individualized, far-reaching insight into growth and treatment changes. Reliable measurement of local, actual changes in direction and amount is possible, allowing interpretation of the biologic events that took place. This book provides a critical, in-depth review of the history of cephalometric superimposition and the background and development of the structural method; demonstrates how to apply the structural method; and provides help and instruction for correct interpretation of the resulting superimpositions. Accurate cephalometric tracings and superimpositions represent the best way to demonstrate and evaluate changes resulting from dentofacial skeletal growth and treatment. This book will help readers to produce superimpositions with maximal accuracy, based on the best available scientific biologic evidence.
