Very well written and THE best book to date concerning the mental side of Competitive Tennis

First the disclaimer: I'm a sold out Rafa Nadal fan. I appreciate everything about his game but, even more what is seen as him the person. In an age of Egos larger than life in professional sports, and lifestyles that overstep the limits of decency, Rafa could not be more different. This book not only outlines this as fact, but reinforces what many would take for granted these days; there are few things more priceless than a strong family.

In terms of reading this from a tennis player's perspective, this is not a book about technique. However, Rafa's first-person account of what he was saying to himself, what his mental success and failure points were, is in my perspective, in the same league with, if not of more practical use, than The Inner Game of Tennis, Winning Ugly by Brad Gilbert, or any other book that addresses the mental approach to tennis. There is a tremendous amount to learn from his approach.

Second disclaimer: The book has only been out for 24 hours and I'm only 2/3 of the way through it. Specifically, the book is just starting to discuss the 2010 US Open. But, I can't put it down (Well, in fact I have to. I have to go to work). I'm willing to bet that, if you read about tennis, play tennis, or in any way are interested in Rafa, you'll have the same experience I'm having reading this book.

One last perspective. If there's aver a second book written By Rafa and his team, I hope it's about how he transitions from Tennis to whatever is next in his life. That could be a sequel even more interesting to read.

A REAL INSIGHT INTO WHAT MAKES RAFA TICK

I was eagerly awaiting Rafa's autobiography and pre-ordered it months ago, it was well worth the wait. I really enjoyed it and I read it in one weekend as I couldn't put it down, it's a real page turner!

It gives a real insight into what makes Rafa tick, it's very honest, inspiring and really interesting; I've been a fan of Rafa's for 6 years and I admire him even more after reading this book.

The book is really well written and each chapter has 2 sections, the 1st written by Rafa and the 2nd by John Carlin with more info and insights. I especially like the way he describes Rafa as "Clark Kent and Superman" and reveals that Rafa has fears and insecurites (as most of us do & can relate to) but the way he conquers them and has achieved all he has is a real inspiration. I also love the inclusion of Rafa's family giving more inights about his personality.

There are 16 pages of colour photos in it ranging from when Rafa was a child to his US Open win last year.

A great book, Rafa fans will love it.

The workings of a tennis machine

RAFA is a remarkable book which gives amazing insights into the mind of a tennis legend. The way he prepares before a game, his mental state during a game, his methods of handling the disappointments and the successes of the tennis court - all of this makes RAFA a fascinating read.

The book has a unique format in which the first person account by Nadal is interspersed with chapters by John Carlin. The chapters by Nadal mainly talk about some of the important matches of his fledging tennis career, starting with THE MATCH - the Wimbledon 2008 final; his surprisingly strong family ties and its impact on his game; his domineering uncle and coach for 20 years - Toni and of course, his never say die spirit which is visible in most of his matches, among other things.

As the chapters go on, the book slowly uncovers the duality of Rafael Nadal - the one on the tennis court and the other off it. The one on the court is a gladiator who fights till the end, never gives up, doesn't know what fear is and ruthlessly decimates his opposition. The one off the tennis court is a soft, insecure lad , a boy next door, who is scared of dog, who is uncomfortable driving a bicycle or a motorbike and one who is scared of flying in a helicopter ! The contrast cannot be more starker.

The importance he gives to his family and friends and in turn their impact on his game is mentioned throughout the book. After a remarkable year of 2008 when he won both French Open and Wimbledon and became No.1 for the first time, 2009 was a big let down, when he was dogged by injuries, when he lost in French Open for the first time and eventually lost the No.1 ranking. As he writes, this dip in his career was as much due to the separation of his parents as due to external factors like injuries and loss of form. In fact, according to him, the mental trauma he experienced due to his parent's separation was actually the root cause for most of his injuries during that time.

In the final part of the book he also mentions his rather strange relationship with his uncle and coach - Toni. Though he gives a lot of credit to Toni for installing in him the fighting spirit of a gladiator and making him the tennis player he is now, he also mentions couple of incidents where he thinks Toni crossed the line. There are nuggets spread throughout book about their relationship and if you connect the dots you feel as if Nadal is only 'tolerating' Toni because of his gratitude towards Toni for making him what he is now. But again, that is only my interpretation.

Overall, RAFA is an inspirational read. Through a living example the book tells that to succeed you have to make sacrifices, to succeed you need to have discipline and dedication, to succeed you have to fight till the last point. Nothing comes easy in this world, but if you put an honest effort, nothing is too difficult to achieve !

Breathtaking Beauty

This is an extraordinary collection of art - comprehensive and diverse, spanning a significant portion of human history. Brief descriptions and explanatory text are sprinkled about but the greatest pleasure, in my opinion, derives from the gorgeous reproductions of art related to alchemy and mysticism.
I actually own two copies of this book. One that I peruse regularly and another that I shall keep as a spare should my first wear out. It is an excellent gift - very uplifting and immensely inspiring.
The subject of alchemy has been somewhat cheapened in our time - reduced to a few basic - often misrepresented - ideas and thrown about by simple minds with incoherent ideas. Few people have encountered the breadth of the subject and the contributions it has made to human civilizations. The inspiration it has provided artists and scientists is immense and this book captures quite a bit of this significance.
The author neither advocates existing belief in alchemy and mysticism, nor denies it. It is a historical perspective - largely relayed through imagery - celebrating the great beauty of the subject and the complexities it once contained.

Short version of the original book

Why do I give this book only 2 stars? I don't agree with the way this book is marketed. Watch out for ordering this book, as there are two books of the same title, author and publisher. What's the difference? One of the books has the word 'icons' on it and has only 192 pages from the original book. The original book has 712 pages. Check that the ISBN's match for what you are after. I made the mistake of buying this book from a site that did not list the page numbers and went off the title, publisher, author and picture on the front cover. Since first writing this review, I have now returned to say that I have the original 712 paged book and am very happy with it. When it comes to a book like this, why settle for second best?

A Museum should have better reproductions.

High praise that somebody said she owned two copies, one as a spare. I agree that this is a nice book to have as a reference, and I'm sure it must be the largest collection of "Hermetick" and "Alchymical" images presently available under one cover. That said, it's pretty small (although to produce this in a large volume would probably put its price out of the range of the average enthusiast), the colors are often badly reproduced, and the text is only excusable because nobody expects much in the way of text from Taschen. The main thing you have here is convenience. I have a large enough collection of books that I can track down superior examples of most of these images...but I have to track them down. With this book, I just flip through the pages. As a companion to this book I would suggest either (preferably, if you can find it) "Alchemy: the Medieval Alchemists and Their Royal Art" by Johannes Fabricius, or (failing that) "The Golden Game: Alchemical Engravings of the Seventeenth Century" by Stanislas Klossowski de Rola, for a better look at the engravings specifically. Also, "Art and Symbols of the Occult" by James Wasserman has the best color reproductions I've seen of the lavishly-painted sixteenth-century alchemical manuscript "Splendor Solis," amidst many other amusing curiosities.

About the Author

Brian R. Johnson is an associate professor in the School of Criminal justice at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He received his Ph.D. in the social sciences from Michigan State University in 1998. He also holds an MLIR in industrial relations and human resource management and an MS in criminal justice from Michigan State University. He received his BA from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. His primary areas of interest are organizational and legal issues in private security and law enforcement. Johnson has served as a trainer and consultant to a number of private security organizations, has worked in proprietary and contract security organizations, and is the author of several articles and publications in the field of private security and law enforcement. He is also a member of the American Society for Industrial Security.

A recurring theme often heard from leaders in the field of private security is that although managers typically possess the technical skills needed to excel in the workplace, they often lack the fundamental "people" skills that are equally important to ensuring that an organization runs smoothly. In my experience teaching at the university level, many of the major discussion points and questions from my students are not related to security systems, technology, or hardware. Instead, they deal with the interpersonal aspects of managing people and with the daily activities a security manager is expected to perform. My own employment and other practical experiences with security organizations has validated these concerns and prompted me to address these issues in this book.

I wrote Principles of Security Management with an orientation aimed at providing the reader with a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to be an effective security manager. This book is premised on the fact that security operations and practices do not operate in isolation. Regardless of whether the security organization is proprietary or contractual, it operates in a broad context and interacts with other departments, organizations, or systems.

This implies that students and security practitioners need to apply cutting-edge business practices and principles in their organizations if they are to ensure personal and organizational success. In order to help readers achieve this goal, this book incorporates contemporary research and information drawn from the social science and business literature. It provides the reader with a comprehensive and balanced understanding of the role and functions of security in the twenty-first century.

The organization of this book reflects the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are needed to be a successful security manager and maximize an employee's potential. The focus is on the management of the greatest asset any company can possess—its employees.

The first three chapters provide the basic framework for the remainder of the text. Chapter 1, the introduction, provides the reader with a general discussion of the current state of security and management principles. A historical review of the industry is also presented to help the reader gain an understanding of the current state of security. Chapter 2, meanwhile, provides the reader with an understanding of the need for leaders in security organizations and reviews principles and theories related to effective leadership. Chapter 3 summarizes the major points of being an effective supervisor, including the diverse roles and responsibilities of the supervisor. The fundamental managerial activity of planning and decision making is discussed in detail in Chapter 4.

The next five chapters focus on the progression of managerial activities related to supervising employees. Chapter 5 examines the recruitment and selection process as well as legal issues that must be considered when hiring new employees. Chapter 6 provides a general overview of issues related to training employees. Once these employees are properly trained, another managerial responsibility is motivating them to maximize their potential and contribution to the organization. Motivation is addressed in Chapter 7. The need for monitoring the performance of individuals is also a fundamental managerial activity. Chapter 8 discusses contemporary approaches to properly managing and designing an appraisal system that is acceptable to employees and managers in the organization. Chapter 9 deals with issues related to the discipline and discharge processes in organizations. It includes a discussion on the need for the creation and maintenance of a disciplinary program as well as procedures for discharging employees in an ethical, fair, and legal manner.

The next three chapters examine specific issues in private security. Chapter 10 exposes the reader to a greater understanding of the history of unions and collective bargaining in the United States, the grievance administration process, and security's role during strikes. One activity that all managers will need to engage in over the course of their careers is conducting security surveys. Chapter 11 provides the reader with a general understanding of the need for security surveys, including various approaches when conducting security audits. It includes a discussion of the minimum requirements for what should be included or analyzed. Organizational planning also requires the creation of budgets. Chapter 12 provides an analysis of the budgeting process in organizations by examining the various purposes behind budgeting and the roles of managers in the budgeting process.

Another regular managerial responsibility is scheduling employees. Chapter 13 examines the process of putting together a schedule and various types of models that can be used to effectively schedule employees in an organization. The last chapter is an overview of issues that the security industry will be expected to address during the next three decades, such as defining security as a profession, changes in the legal environment, and expansion into new markets.
