This book presumes nothing; it starts from first principles and gradually introduces, justifies, and teaches a rigorous process and notation for collecting and expressing the information needs of a business or organization.

This book is for anyone involved in the creation of information-management software. It is particularly useful to the designers of databases and applications driven by database management systems.

In many regards, this book is different from other books about data modeling. First, because it starts from first principles, it encourages you to question what you might already know about data modeling and data-modeling notations. To best serve users, how should the process of data modeling work? To create good, economical software systems, what kind of information should be on a data model? To become an effective data modeler, what skills should you master before talking with users?

Second, this book teaches you the process of data modeling. It doesn’t just tell you what you should know; it tells you what to do. You learn fundamental skills, you integrate them into a process, you practice the process, and you become an expert at it. This means that you can become a "content-neutral modeler," moving gracefully among seemingly unrelated projects for seemingly unrelated clients. Because the process of modeling applies equally to all projects, your expertise becomes universally applicable. Being a master data modeler is like being a master statistician who can contribute to a wide array of unrelated endeavors: population studies, political polling, epidemiology, or baseball.

Third, this book does not focus on technology. Instead, it maintains its focus on the process of discovering and articulating the users’ information needs, without concern for how those needs can or should be satisfied by any of the myriad technological options available. We do not completely ignore technology; we frequently mention it to remind you that during data modeling, you should ignore it. Users don’t care about technology; they care about their information. The notation we use, Logical Data Structures (LDS), encourages you to focus on users’ needs. We think a data modeler should conceal technological details from users. But historically, many data modelers are database designers whose everyday working vocabulary is steeped in technology. When technologists talk with users, things can get awkward. In the worst case, users quit the conversation, or they get swept up in the technological details and neglect to paint a complete picture of their technology-independent information needs. Data modeling is not equivalent to database design.

Another undesirable trend: historically, many organizations wrongly think that data modeling can be done only by long-time, richly experienced members of the organization who have reached the status of "unofficial archivist." This is not true. Modeling is a set of skills like computer programming. It can be done by anyone equipped with the skills. In fact, a skilled modeler who is initially unfamiliar with the organization but has access to users will produce a better model than a highly knowledgeable archivist who is unskilled at modeling.

This book has great ambitions for you. To realize them, you cannot read it casually. Remember, we’re trying to foster skills in you rather than merely deliver knowledge to you. If you master these skills, you can eventually apply them instinctively.

To study this book rather than merely read it, you need to understand a bit about what kind of information it contains. The information falls into eight categories.

Introduction and justification. Chapters 1 and 2 define the data-modeling problem, introduce the LDS technique and notation, and describe good habits that any data modeler should exhibit. Chapters 22 and 24 justify in more technical detail some of the decisions we made when designing the LDS technique and notation.
Definitions. Chapter 4 defines the vocabulary you need to read everything that follows. Chapter 13 defines things more formally--articulating exactly what constitutes a syntactically correct LDS. Chapter 23 presents a formal definition of our Logical Data Structures in a format we especially like--as an LDS.
Reading an LDS. Chapter 3 describes how to translate an LDS into declarative sentences. The sentences are typically spoken to users to help them understand an in-progress LDS. Chapter 5 describes how to visualize and annotate sample data for an LDS.
Writing an LDS. Chapter 13 describes the syntax rules for writing an LDS. Chapter 14 describes the guidelines for naming the parts of an LDS. Chapter 15 describes some seldom-used names that are part of any LDS. Chapter 16 describes how to label parts of an LDS. (Labels and names differ.) Chapter 17 describes how to document an LDS.
LDS shapes and recipes. Chapter 7 introduces the concept of shapes and tells how your expertise with them can make you a master data modeler. Chapters 8 through 12 give an encyclopedic, exhaustive analysis of the shapes you will encounter as a data modeler. Chapter 26 describes some recipes--specific applications of the shapes to common problems encountered by software developers and database designers.
Process of LDS development. Chapters 6 and 21 give elaborate examples of the process of LDS development. Chapter 18 describes a step-by-step script, called The Flow, that you follow in your conversations with users. Chapters 19 and 20 describe steps you can take to improve an in-progress LDS at any time--steps that do not fit into the script in any particular place because they fit in every place. Considered as a whole, Chapters 18 through 20 describe the process of controlled evolution, the process by which you guide the users through a conversation that gradually improves the in-progress LDS. "Controlled" implies that the conversation is organized and methodical. "Evolution" implies that the conversation yields a continuously, gradually improving data model.
Implementation and technology issues. Chapter 22 describes in detail the forces that compel us to exclude constraints from the LDS notation. Many of these forces stem from implementation issues. Chapter 25 describes a technique for creating a relational schema from an LDS.

Very important book.

The secret is out!
I've been using the techniques described in this book for years because one of the authors taught me. I've used them to model data about research science, business, and topology. Now others can learn it too.
Carlis cured me of normalization. There's a difference between normalization and "normal forms". A goal of modeling is to produce databases in high normal forms - Boyce-Codd Normal Form, fifth normal form, etc... Most modelers think the only way to do this is through normalization, a specific process that step-by-step improves to a draft model. This book shows how to avoid that process completely. I used to do normalization. Now I use the conversational techniques of this book to reach high normal forms sooner. One thing I always hated about Normalization was that I usually did it after talking to users, which means I was making decisions that the users should have been making. I have not performed normalization in at least ten years. Yet I still produce databases in high normal form. This book does include a chapter about normalization, with normal forms up to fifth, so you can see for yourself how the technique produces high-normal-form databases. If you learned that normalization was essential part of data modeling, this chapter will help you learn this different way of working. If you are new to data modeling, you should start with this book to avoid learning normalization altogether. The principles of high normal forms are important, but the process of normalization is ludicrous.
This is a book about data modeling, not physical database design. It concentrates on the modeling in users' language. The naming conventions it recommends are based on guidelines of language and categories. If you follow these naming guidelines, you will not need to learn a huge list of more specific, special-case naming rules.
I also like what Carlis and MaGuire say about constraints. By following their constraint advice, I have become a much faster data modeler, and my team mates (programmers, DBAs) do not have to wait so long for me to finish my work. It also helps me keep my data models flexible, good for a changing business environment.
This book has more examples than any book on modeling I have ever seen. I stopped counting sample data models when I got to 300.
The hardest part of application design is understanding the user's data. This book concentrates on solving that problem, leaving the technical details of database design to other books.

Beware- there's alot more to Data Modeling than this!

I disagree that a person could become a "master" data modeler if the contents of this book are the complete set of skills in their arsenal. While the book outlines some good techniques for interviewing end users and basic data modeling skills, there is alot more involved in data modeling than what is covered here.
As an experienced data modeler who works with large, complex data models in a constantly changing business, I find I do not refer to this book at all. The book excludes common data modeling constructs that I have found very useful, including subtypes and supertypes. The book does not explain the difference between conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling. (It covers techniques used to capture conceptual/logical level data, but nowhere does it explain that or the difference between this type of model and a physical model, and why and when you'd need one or the other.)
The book does not cover normalization, which, once one leaves the interview with end users, one will need to understand. The book does not mention data integration with other systems or databases, how this topic is important and could (and often should) arise in interviews with end users.
Some of the topics covered I found shallow and incomplete, for example, how to name things in a data model. The authors take a parochial view by ignoring real world issues such as using consistent names across database and organizations, and avoiding naming things for what they are used for, not what they are.
As a practicing data modeler, I find my users aren't as naieve about data models as Carlis and Maguire assume them to be. I often am asked why I am modeling data in a given way. In my view, this book does not address the "why" - why do you model the data in the way suggested, and what happens if you don't. When I can answer these questions well for my customers, I earn approval, and this book doesn't equip one to do so.
In sum, my belief is that this book contains about 1/4 of the information a person needs to know to become a "master" data modeler. It's a good starter book if you are a novice data modeler or are having trouble gathering information from business subject matter experts, but if you really want to become an expert data modeler, I'd recommend continuing beyong this book. I prefer 'Data Modeling Essentials 2nd Edition' by Graeme Simsion

Excellent book, very efficient method

The book describes a method to structure any given sets of data according to generic rules. Eventhough my background does not allow me to judge the theoretical validity of the method, the book is easy to read and all the concepts are easy to understand and described in details. I have applied the Carlis and Maguire method for modeling data in a small research group and it is brilliant. The method allows users to discuss their data in their own language and the modeler can build a logical representation which is understood and well accepted by the users. I will certainly use this book and the method for any future database design.

The Gullah people of the Sea Islands of South Carolina have preserved ways of life and speech from West African slave culture and plantation times. Robinson, a native of Daufuskie, one of the islands, writes that "most of our food came from the land-and water-around our tin-roofed home." This book honors a love of her childhood and her family, and that love is intertwined with food. Introducing most recipes are reminiscences of loading the wood stove, trips to the store, fishing for sheepshead, washing clothes on a washboard and cooking "long pots" (slow-cooked meals). Beautiful photos of island life and a relaxed attitude toward cooking ("these are recipes, not rules") make for accessible additions to anyone's Southern repertoire, with homespun dishes like Tada Salad, Sea Island Okra Gumbo and Fuskie Crab Patties. Sticky-Bush Blackberry Dumpling and Crackin' Conch and Rice are the kind of authentically regional recipes that are harder and harder to come by these days. Pot Full O' Coon and Fried Squirrel may not be the next trendy item on a Manhattan menu (Robinson admits she doesn't cook possum anymore), but these are the recipes that give the book its unique, almost anthropological intrigue. Given that many recipes begin with bacon or pork fat, this is not a cookbook meant for nouveau palates as much as it is for the preservation of a unique, fascinating culture. Wonderful to browse through and experiment with, this is an excellent volume for anyone interested in Southern and African-American culture and food.

Bring the Gullah Culture to My Kitchen

My trip inspired me to want to learn southern cooking. I previously purchased a Gullah cookbook when I visited the Gullah Festival in Beaufort, SC, and when I returned, my neighbor showed me her copy of Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way. I read the introduction by Pat Conroy who was the teacher who went to Daufuskie to teach the island children and the author of this cookbook was one of his students. I'm still learning to cook the Defuskie Way, but will try more of the recipes. Good book for those who like to try new recipes for old favorites. Please see my review for The Water is Wide.

Neither Claire or Jake quite knew what to expect, but found each other's initial preconceived notions to be...gratefully mistaken.

About the Author
Paul Halter was born in Hagenau, Alsace, in 1956. He pursued technical studies in his youth before joining the French Marines in the hope of seeing the world. Disappointed with the lack of travel, he left the military and, for a while, sold life insurance while augmenting his income playing the guitar in the local dance orchestra. Upon discovering the writings of John Dickson Carr, he gave up the guitar for the pen. He has since written over 30 novels, almost all ‘locked room,’ including ‘The Lord of Misrule’ and ‘The Fourth Door’ – which won the coveted Prix du Roman Policier in 1987– also available in English on Amazon. In 2006 his collection of short stories ‘The Night of the Wolf’ appeared, to critical acclaim.

Murder has no language barrier

Paul Halter's 1997 novel "The Seven Wonders of Crime" has now been published in English, thanks to the relentless efforts of translator John Pugmire. It is the second Owen Burns novel to be translated after "The Lord of Misrule" and the third Halter published in English, hot on the heels of his award-winning The Fourth Door.

"The Seven Wonders of Crime" is centered on a fascinating idea. Owen Burns and Achilles Stock are back in action as a serial killer begins to terrorize the nation. The faceless madman is killing people in apparently impossible ways and all the while patterning his murders on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It's an impressive to-do list and the killer is making his job harder by sending taunting messages to the police, not by handwriting his message or pasting it with various letters from newspapers, but by painting his messages onto canvas!!! (Naturally, I use "he" to describe the killer for the sake of convenience. Don't take the pronoun as a clue.)

This attracts the attention of Owen Burns, aesthete extraordinaire who loves the concept of beauty and tries to discover the artistic soul behind these murders. For if you consider murder as a fine art, this killer is creating masterpieces! Seven impossible crimes, and the messages sent to the police in advance contain coded clues...

But perhaps it's a bit misleading to speak of all the crimes as impossibilities. The fifth murder never struck me as impossible, and the impossibility involved in the last murder is not the murder itself. Nevertheless, these are some really creative scenarios. Let's take the first murder for instance: that of a lighthouse keeper as a storm is raging outside, cutting him off from the world. Suddenly, a scream sounds in the night: the keeper has burst into flames and is screaming for someone to come and help him. Nobody can come to his aid because access to the lighthouse is impossible. At the first possible moment, police officers go to the lighthouse, where they discover that someone locked the poor man in from the outside, thus eliminating the possibilities of a bizarre suicide or equally-bizarre accident.

Another example of Halter's creativity in these scenarios can be found in the fourth murder: a certain Major Rhodes is found in his house dead. The house is conveniently surrounded by some earth which proves that nobody left or entered the house. The cause is dehydration, and yet... there is a carafe full of water right by the corpse!!!

I won't give away the scenarios behind the other murders. These are extremely creative and readers ought to discover them for themselves. Part of this book's greatest delight is wondering what the next impossibility will be, and just how the killer will be able to fit in the reference to another Wonder. Some of these solutions are top-notch... others are not. I found three of them top-notch and only one a major disappointment. Unfortunately, the major disappointment is the book's most intriguing set-up: the major's death as a result of dehydration. The other solutions are flawed but they do have points of interest.

As for the killer's motive, we've seen it done before, but it's presented in an intriguing way here, with an odd mix between lunacy and rationality. You can certainly tell why Owen Burns was attracted to the case! However, I was not a huge fan of the way the crimes were explained, divided into seven "lessons" where Owen Burns and one of the characters discuss the crimes. Here, the killer's identity suddenly becomes obvious, even before the first murder is explained. To this point, there weren't too many clues pointing to the killer (although the clueing is technically fair), but this format gives the game away pages before it should. The ending, which could have been haunting, loses much of its potential because of this.

Owen Burns is my favourite of Halter's series characters. He's the most original and interesting, with a personality inspired by Oscar Wilde. This book gains a lot from his presence. If it were solved by anyone else, I don't think I'd enjoy this book as much. Burns is obsessed with the idea of art and tries to find it in these crimes. He does a pretty good job, and Halter seems to enjoy writing his character.

The Seven Wonders of Crime is a tough book to translate, and I give translator John Pugmire full marks here. The killer's cryptic paintings contain cleverly-worded clues that don't always translate well into English. John Pugmire does a wonderful job of keeping the clues intact while tinkering with the language to make it compatible with English. For instance, in the French edition of the novel, the murdered lighthouse keeper is named Alexandre Riley. In the English translation, he's renamed Adrian Maxwell. This small change ensures that the clue in the first note doesn't get lost in translation. Overall, I liked the Kindle edition. It's well-formatted and proof-read. As with any book, there are a few mistakes, but these aren't distracting. If you don't want to spend $20 on the book, the Kindle edition provides an excellent alternative.

Overall, The Seven Wonders of Crime is a fascinating read. It's not quite perfect, failing to deliver on the impossible crime that intrigued me the most. But it is an excellent read and, in my opinion, an improvement on the first book in the Owen Burns series. The plot is fast-paced and fairly-clued and the set-up is marvellously intriguing. It's an incredible journey through the fascinating imagination of Paul Halter, and I'd recommend it to aficionados of the impossible crime.

(Way) too much of a good thing.

My favorite mystery is "Rim of the Pit" by Hake Talbot. It contains a number of puzzles: a locked room murder, a ghost materializes at a seance, a murderer appears to be able to fly, plus others. Piled on top of each other, Talbot still managed to make his tale, not quite believable, but plausible. Paul Halter writes impossible crime stories, and this one just seems like overkill. Seven impossible murders occur, and while police are baffled, Owen Burns, amateur sleuth, does manage to unravel the clues and in the end explain how each of the crimes was committed. But Owen is not a particularly engaging character, and another major player, a young woman, is constantly referred to as an incredible beauty, which gets old. Not a complete failure, but it was making my head ache near the end.

Seven Impossible Crimes For The Price Of One

Once again, thanks to John Pugmire's translation, a spectacularly-clever whodunit, from the inventive imagination of Paul Halter, is finally available to English readers. I can't think of any other author, even at the height of the Golden Age of Detection, who set himself the hurdles Halter sets for himself here, and clears.
It's hard enough to come up with one seemingly-impossible murder, but Halter has seven of them here, as a murderer whose motives could not be more obscure challenges the police. The killer sends them paintings with cryptic messages announcing future crimes, and pulls them off. They include a lighthouse keeper somehow burned to death on top of his lighthouse, without any way for the killer to have escaped, given the violent storm raging, and a man dead of dehydration, although he is free to move, and has a carafe of water within reach.
As with The Lord of Misrule and The Fourth Door, the book is fast-moving and atmospheric. Even readers who suspect the culprit will be hard-pressed to figure out how the murders were pulled off.
If you enjoy matching wits with an author, this is for you. If this is your first Halter book, it won't be your last, and fans of intelligent crime fiction, carefully-plotted, will have a hard time waiting for Pugmire's translation of The Demon of Dartmoor-which features a killer who is literally invisible!

Well done survey of world history. The important evolutionary trends of civilization were followed without attempting to place everything on a specific time line. The flexible approach to the presentation enabled the sweeps of history to be conceptualized without having to memorize all the facts and dates. The facts were there, however, one could easily place the facts in the proper categories to be remembered.

Clearly I'm not on the same page as the majority of reviewers who rave about this book. I found it to be pretentious, boring, unbelievable and ultimately pointless. The only thing that gave me pause for thought was the rather disturbing fact that most people seem to think this book is fantastic...

Travelling towards nothingness

Yes I made up my mind that I liked it. Anyway I read through it in no time and in a perfect scenario, a beach in a Greek island. But I felt a brusque split between the first part dominated by the main male figure and the last chapters where the female takes the foreground and the descent into self-destruction engulfs the narrative. Poignant language and perfect companion for travellers.

Complex Book

This book reminded me of something Hemingway would write. Parts were slow and I wanted more to happen. The characters were so foreign to my way of life, it was hard for me to fathom why they would spend so much money and get so little pleasure out of their travels. I kept thinking, "Don't they have anything better to do with their lives?"

While that departure from philosophy continues to haunt his name and work, one must question whether his thought from 1912 to 1976 should be measured by the yardstick of his politics from May, 1933, through February, 1934. Th is anthology addresses his complex but simple thought and his simple but complex life.

In a real sense, Sheehan claims, there is no content to Heidegger's topic and legacy, only a method. But method must not be taken to mean a technique or procedure for philosophical thinking. Rather, the topic of Heidegger's thought and his pursuit of that topic, the "what" and the "how," are one and the same thing.

Heidegger writes, "Alles ist Weg," "Everything is way," and man's Being is to be on-the-way in essential movement. Heidegger, argues in our essence we humans are the topic and the point is not to be led there so much as to come to know what we already know and to become what we already are. This brilliant collection confirms this truism, and is an excellent introduction to the work of this seminal thinker.

About the Author

Thomas Sheehan is professor emeritus of philosophy at Loyola University Chicago and professor of religious studies at Stanford University. He is the author of The First Coming: How the Kingdom of God Became Christianity, Karl Rahner: The Philosophical Foundations and co-editor and translator of Edmund Husserl’s, Psychological and Transcendental Phenomenology, and The Confrontation with Heidegger.
