Well Formatted Devotional & Meditation Bible

A.W. Tozer's eloquent and often prophetic challenge to the body of Christ in the twentieth century continues to build and mature the faith of many worldwide. Hendrickson celebrates Tozer's devotion to the Word of God and his penetrating commentary on contemporary Christianity with the new A.W. Tozer Bible. While neither a study Bible nor a devotional Bible, the A.W. Tozer Bible presents an aesthetically pleasing presentation of the KJV text partnered with consistent and weighty commentary from Tozer's works.

LAYOUT

The A.W. Tozer Bible is laid out more like a devotional Bible than a study Bible. The excerpts from Tozer's works stand more as full passages of commentary than as simple explanatory notes and are more spiritual than academic in content. This leads to a well thought out but flexible layout that accommodates the placement of large blocks of text. "Challenges" sections are shorter and are nestled in the corners of the page, while "On Scripture" and "Reflections" are at the bottom of the page in a single column. This retains quite a bit of readability, mostly because the "Challenges" are infrequent, but also because the intrusions have a nice order and are separated by shading and color as well as by position and font choice.

The KJV text is presented in two columns in a traditional verse per line format. This is partnered with an outside column of cross-references which are fairly small but very readable because of the font choice and the placement on the outside margin. The text stands in a nice nine point font, which is generous and readable but not quite large enough to be considered large print.

The text and layout is divided by color as well as by position, which gives it a nice aesthetic appeal and helps divide the portions of the text. This is similar to the Max Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible, but is accomplished far better with different tones of red, orange, brown and gray.

Jesus words are presented in a very pleasing crimson; however, this inclusion of color in the rest of the layout makes it so that this feature doesn't pop as much as in other editions.

This layout succeeds in a complex arrangement of different text, color, column, and font styles. The shaded boxes accent the double column layout without detracting significantly from readability and the choice to make an outside column for the cross-references makes them highly accessible but also nearly invisible during casual reading. The design and purpose of this Bible does not lend itself to a consistent layout, but Hendrickson has created a well-laid out consistency that maintains readability and a heavy aesthetic style.

NOTES

The A.W. Tozer Bible allows Tozer's classic works to illuminate the Bible text and invigorate spiritual devotion and Bible meditation. The main feature used to accomplish this purpose is the "On Scripture" passages, which select passages from Tozer's writings and sermons that focus on the revelation within a certain scripture. The Bible includes over 365 of these selections, which stand out as the feature most akin to traditional study notes or devotional Bible material. In addition to the "On Scripture" passages, the Bible also features "Reflections" and "Challenges" which may relate thematically to scripture but stands more alone without direct relation to Scripture. The Bible includes over 500 passages within the text, which averages out to about one on every other page of the Bible. While this is not anywhere near a full study Bible, the selections are longer than study notes and occur often enough that one or more would be paired with daily reading selections.

Tozer maintains a strong literary style and a powerful, insistent tone. His writing is saturated with a heavy emphasis on holiness, an expansive view of God, a passion for intimacy with Christ, and a biting indictment of worldliness within the church. His writing is expressive of a deep love for God and a jealous fervor over the backslidden church. His words often jar the soul into life even as they inspire greater love and devotion to God.

FEATURES

This Bible features succinct book introductions, a brief biography of A.W. Tozer, well formatted cross-references, a 145 page concordance and eight multi-color maps.

Most of these features are standard in a reference edition, though the A.W. Tozer Bible features a larger concordance and fewer cross-references than most.

CONCLUSION

A.W. Tozer was extremely prolific and his journals and sermons are still being compiled into new volumes of work. In some ways I was disappointed that this edition didn't take greater advantage of his copious amount of writing, as a complete study Bible or commentary would almost be possible to extract from his life's work. However, this edition does present a large body of his material in close proximity of the biblical text. The 500 plus selections from his works are the equivalent of a full survey of his writing and will provide more than enough devotional and inspirational content for the average reader. In addition the formatting and layout of this Bible is well accomplished and aesthetically pleasing. Because of the intermittent nature of the selections, I would not recommend this as a reference work, but as a fully functional Bible for the A.W. Tozer aficionado or for those who wish to include Tozer's rousing words in their daily study of the Bible.

A good reading and divotional Bible

The A. W. Tozer Bible from Hendrickson Publishers is a study/devotional Bible with writings from one of the 20th century's most beloved Christian authors. A. W. Tozer was a Pastor, Preacher, Teacher, and Student who wrote many books in his 40-year ministry. This Bible includes over 500 selections from his writings.

Text
The font looks to be a more modern digital font. I'm not sure of the font's size, but it looks close to 9-point. It has extra leading between the lines, giving plenty of room to underline. There are no footnotes indicators in the text itself. This makes the text very clean and readable.

One of my favorite features is the text layout. Poetry is set in verse format which is offset from the regular text. I like the way this looks. It helps not only to identify the genre of Scripture, but also makes the text more readable.

The reference of the first verse that appears on the page is printed at the top of each page. Paragraph markers continue throughout the New Testament. Headings and verse numbers are bold, making them stand out from the rest of the text. The red-letter is a nice shade of red. There is some variation, but it does look nice and it's very readable. Book introductions include information on the books background, message, time, and an outline complete with verses.

Paper
The paper isn't shiny or too thin, making this a good Bible for coloring and writing. It's fairly opaque, making it easier to read.

References
The references are on the outside margin. They include the verse number. There are no indicators in the text to know which reference goes to which portion of the verse. There are a lot of references, with most verses having several. The references do not contain translation notes.

Features
What makes this Bible unique is its 500 selections that are taken from 40 of Tozer's writings. The selections are placed into three categories called On Scripture, Reflections, and Challenges and mostly vary from 2 to 4 paragraphs (though there are a few smaller and a few larger). The selections are well-written with the focus on deepening your walk with God.

On Scripture - these are insights of specific verses or passages. They're found on the page with the passage and often contain thoughts on application. These make up the majority of the articles.
Reflections - the articles are deeper thoughts about the application of Scripture.
Challenges - these are challenges to strengthen your walk with God through Biblical application.

Concordance
The concordance is 145 pages. There are plenty of entries to look up. The entry for God takes almost a full column of text, which is more than most Bibles.

Maps
There are 8 pages of maps. The maps are in full color and they look nice. The paper for the maps is thicker than the other paper. There is no index to maps.

Citations of Tozer's Works
In the back is a list of Tozer's 40 works that are cited throughout the Bible.

Conclusion
The A. W. Tozer Bible has many features in its layout that I would like to see as standard in Bibles. As far as the content, there are a lot of insights that make for good thought-provoking study and reading. Tozer's writings give this Bible a rich devotional quality. The A. W. Tozer Bible would be a valuable addition to your library.

A W Tozer King James Bible is wonderful

A W Tozer has become my favorite Christian writer. His books are easy to read and insightful. They are well written and give such helpful information not found elsewhere. He has been a wonderful discovery, amazon has been very helpful as an on line book store, where I happened to discover A W Tozer, having never heard of him in my youth. Making up for lost time, though, and very thankful this man came into our lives through the written word, a real blessing! My first book of his was The purpose of man, really stood out, and as I read that first book, I knew that A W Tozer became my paster! A great man, and author of great books! His King James Bible is wonderful too. I hope you will discover how good his books are today! :)

About the Author
Rudolf Wittkower was born in Berlin in 1901. Leaving Germany when the Nazis came to power, he was one of the animators of the Warburg Institute of London. In 1941 he organized, with Fritz Saxl, the exhibition British Art and the Mediterranean, the publication of which (1948) forms an important document of the aims and methods of the Warburg Institute. A great scholar of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, Wittkower taught at both the University of London and Columbia University. His books, all important works of scholarship, include Die Zeichnungen des Gian Lorenzo Bernini (with H. Bruer, 1931), The Drawings of the Carracci at Windsor Castle (1952), Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Sculptor of Roman Baroque (1955), Art and Architecture in Italy, 1600-1750 (1958), Born under Saturn (with Margot Wittkower, 1963), and Divine Michelangelo: The Florentine Academy's Homage on His Death in 1564 (with Margot Wittkower, 1964). In addition, he was a frequent contributor to the Journal of the Warbung and Courtauld Institute, the Art Bulletin, Burlington Magazine and the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, among others.

Montagu was for many years the curator of the Photographic collection at the Warburg Institute, University of London.

Joseph Connors, Professor of History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University, was Director of Villa I Tatti from 2002 to 2010.

Pinto is Howard Crosby Butler Memorial Professor, department of art history and archaeology, Princeton University.

Just Endure It to Get to the Third Book

I struggled to decide between 3 and 4 stars. Wish they had the option of 3 1/2.

The "Infinite Sea" suffers under the curse of the sequel. The second in a series is always the weakest link.

This felt much more disappointing than usual because "The 5th Wave" was, without a doubt, one of the best sci-fi books I've read. You fell in the love with the characters, especially Cassie & Evan (and yes, they fell in love with each other). The book was never trite or tiresome or meandering. It was just a great read.

So how did this second in the series fail in comparison with the first?

First, there is not enough Cassie and Evan. They essentially become secondary characters in this book. We barely hear from them or about them. Instead, the focus shifts to other characters, especially Ringer.

The problem is our heart is with Cassie. I really wanted the story to stay with her (primarily). I have no problem with a fleshing out of secondary characters like Ringer, but I just don't want to read a whole (or even half) book about her.

Second, this book became much too convoluted and confusing story-wise. Always the most successful stories are the simplest. The story of bad aliens come to earth to wipe out the humans by something akin to invasion of the body snatchers (the implants really being the first wave against the humans) was simple, but extremely engaging and well-written.

This second book was much too confusing, especially about the implants. Yes, I realize the point was to bring the reader to a place that the characters found themselves in - you can trust no one, because who is really the good guys and who the bad? You just don't know.

I just felt like this was not done successfully. Instead I came away baffled by what was really going on and not feeling particularly satisfied. And Vosch's continual cryptic questions to Ringer about who was good and bad (and Ringers equally cryptic, esoteric, almost metaphysical responses) just became an irritation after awhile. This didn't create mystery for me, just bewilderment and frustration. I wanted to scream: "Just tell the girl what she needs to know already!"

And the incredibly convoluted tests Vosch sets for Ringer were not believable to me. And why her? What makes her so special as opposed to Cassie or anyone else on the alien base?

Third, the writing just wasn't as engaging in this second book. You can't just stick opposites together (such as someone feeling both a frozen heart and a burning soul at the same time, blah blah) and expect to gain depth of character and story-telling. This happened over and over in the book. A few times I can handle, but not when it becomes a literary device that the author resorts to on a frequent basis.

Am I waiting for the third book? Of course. I loved the 1st book much to much to not finish this series. So if you feel similarly, you will just have to slog it through this second book and hope Mr. Yancey comes around again to his brilliant writing for the third.

Of rats and rocks and chess pieces and promises: a fantastic part two in a great trilogy

Rick Yancy's The 5th Wave series envisions the world after aliens known only as the Others attack. Silent and unseen, the Others watched the humans for ten thousand years before their invasion that slaughtered over 7 billion people through pestilence and coastal destruction, leaving them without food, electricity, medicine and with little hope. Small pockets of people are left to fend for themselves when the Others begin to hunt them down, murdering them and spiriting away their small children. The 5th Wave of the invasion is the worst of them all: the Others have taken over human bodies leaving people suspicious and fearful of one another, trusting no one. But then one human girl falls in love with an alien boy...

The second novel, The Infinite Sea, picks up almost immediately after the end of the The 5th Wave. Cassie, mourning the loss of Evan Walker who has been missing since they blew up the alien base, is holed up in an abandoned motel with young refugees from the Others' internment camp. Led by Zombie, the jock from Cassie's high school, the small group of children and teens must make a decision: wait for Evan, as he promised Cassie he would always find her, or head south for the winter. Although Cassie has never trusted her, Ringer volunteers to recon the area before they make a final decision. Cassie even feels a bit of teenage envy toward the intelligent and highly competent soldier-girl. Silly, but very human.

Through flashbacks, the reader learns more about the silent Poundcake, Ringer's father, and Evan Walker's life before the invasion. We do find out what happened to Evan Walker after the explosion. And, the best part of all, Ringer becomes even more badass than the last book. I know a lot of fans questioned (and complained) why so much of the book revolved around Ringer, but what happens to her in this book helps answer some, only some, of the mysteries concerning the aliens and their reason for attacking earth. And, it sets up the third book for a magnificent showdown between humans and aliens.

This second book of the trilogy does not focus on the Cassie/Evan love story like the first and, initially, I missed that angle. Instead, Yancy expands his tale to give Ringer a bigger role, which, by the end of the book, makes total sense. Yes, if humans are ever able to conquer the aliens, the world is going to need inspiring couples like Cassie and Evan to spread hope to those who survive. But for now, warriors like Ringer and Zombie are necessary to bring about that change. While the first book was largely focused on love, The Infinite Sea is about war; dirty, unspeakable war that uses children as soldiers and bombs.

I absolutely love this series. Yancy is a creative writer with a poetic flair that really shines in this book. He gives his characters genuine identities that illuminate all that which makes us human: fear, love, anger, trust, and hope. The reader cares about what happens to this ragtag group and cheers them on and falls in love with them. I pre-ordered this book the second it was available and I will definitely pre-order the third.

Not Quite The Story I Was Expecting

I went into THE INFINITE SEA wanting to know one thing: WHAT HAPPENED TO EVAN WALKER BECAUSE HOLY FREAKING ALIENS EVERYWHERE THE ENDING OF THE FIFTH WAVE WAS LIKE...WHAT EVEN?!

Actually, I had a few other unanswered questions too, but still. Evan. I needed to know what happened to him.

I expected THE INFINITE SEA to pick up where THE FIFTH WAVE left off, with Cassie anxious to find out what happened to Evan, and figuring out how to save humanity. So you can imagine my surprise when that didn't happen. In fact, the story opens with Ringer, a character I barely remembered from book one and honestly, didn't care all that much about. My bad. Because we end up spending 70% of the book with her.

Yes, we find out what happened to Evan.
Eventually.
And yes, we catch up with Cassie, Ben, Sam, Poundcake and Dumbo. But if you go into this expecting some kind of epic humalien reunion with lots of romance and lots of kissing, well---good luck with that.

As with THE FIFTH WAVE, there are multiple POVs that not only alternate between characters but switch tense too. (You risk getting lost if you aren't paying attention.) The action is sporadic and the intensity doesn't kick up until about the halfway mark. But even then it doesn't last long. We do find out what's really going on with Vosch and the Others, but only after wading through copious amounts of superfluous information and metaphors that employ the title of the book which was far more confusing than it was helpful.

And then there was the moment that won the award for Most Creative Escape Tactic Ever. And by creative, I mean, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

That was followed by a sequence of events that confused me even more--are we really doing this or is this just another metaphor for humanity because I can't really tell--and made me question what in the Hades these characters were thinking?!
And then it was over.
Finished.
Done.

As with Rick Yancey's other works, the writing in THE INFINITE SEA is impeccable, but the characters weren't as engaging as they were in THE FIFTH WAVE. I was also under the impression that this was a duology, but apparently, a third book is in the works. Good thing too, because while I am EXTREMELY grateful to have had the chance to read this early, I am frustrated. I feel like this was a filler book with parts that could have been included in book one or cut altogether, and now I'm right back where I started.
