Everything you need to know about the Church

I bought this book for a college book report and it was excellent. The book looks long but in reality many of the pictures take up much of the space. The pictures themselves are amazing and strictly correspond with the topic the author is in. The author, a college professor, simply gives you a summary about what Christianity is and in the rest of the chapters he talks about the history of the Church itself over time(all of the history). Interesting book and WILL give you some information about what Roman Catholicism is. Recommended for research over the Church.

Klugarsh Mind Control for all of us!

I was reminded of this most excellent book yesterday when I heard an interview with the author of *Mind Wide Open* on the radio. He apparently tested a bunch of "brain machines" to write about in his book, and one of them was a video game sort of thing, in which the player must learn to enter the alpha brain state at will in order to succeed at the game.
Of course genius Daniel Pinkwater had this idea years ago!! I kept thinking, "You just have to fall back laughing, saying 'I give up,' of course!" Readers of *Alan Mendelsohn* will have an early advantage if this game hits the big time.
As is the case for many other reviewers, this book was one of the most important of my adolescence, one of the few that I read and re-read. My brother and I would repeatedly crack up reminding each other of a certain unorthodox loudspeaker incident in it.
What I most admire about this book when I think back about it now is that it keeps moving forward into surprising territory---it has a satisfying revenge fantasy plot, a self-actualization plot, an adventure/alternate reality plot, and a refreshing sense of "larger mystery" throughout. As a young adult, it helps to be reminded that there are uncharted realms outside of school's hideousness!

The best novel by one of my favorite authors.

Daniel Pinkwater is one of my 5-10 favorite authors. Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars is his best book. The Big Orange Splot (a picture book) is a very close second.
Fortunately for those of you who have loved this book since childhood, it has now been reprinted as part of the Pinkwater collection 5 Novels, which I bought approximately 5 minutes after I found it in our local bookstore. I'm reading it to my husband now (to introduce him to Pinkwater) and it is at least as good as I remembered (from the last time I read it, two or three years ago). Pinkwater's books are good read aloud although I have to stop and laugh fairly often.
Context in literature:
Alison Lurie's _Don't Tell the Grownups: Subversive Children's Literature_ divides children's stories into two classes. The large majority attempt to teach children how to belong to, or conform to, society. As Lurie says in her foreword: "They were about children or bunny rabbits or little engines who had problems or faults and got into difficult situations, sometimes comic and sometimes serious. But in the end they were always helped by some wise, helpful older person or rabbit or engine. The protagonists of these books, that is, learned to depend on authority for help and advice. They also learned to be hardworking, responsible, and practical; to stay on the track and be content with their lot in life."
Almost all Berenstein Bears books are good examples of this. There is always a moral and if there isn't a book called The Berenstein Bears Learn their Manners there probably will be.
The other, smaller class, Lurie characterizes as subversive; expressing views not commonly spoken in the adult world at the time of writing. This includes most of the books and authors I loved growing up: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass, E. Nesbitt, Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, George McDonald and Dr. Seuss (examples Lurie gives), and Edward Eager, Sylvia Louise Engdahl, Diane Duane, Diana Wynne Jones, Madeline L! 'Engle, Jane Langton, McCaffrey's Harper Hall trilogy, and so on. And Daniel Manus Pinkwater. His main, subversive message throughout his works is: Be Yourself. It's a lot more fun than trying to conform.
Plot synopsis:
I will keep this vague. On this go-around, I was surprised to find that things don't get very weird until about 100 pages in.
Leonard Neeble (the narrator) is a misfit at Bat Masterson Junior High School (Pinkwater always names his schools after villians ... the Snarkout Boys go to Genghis Khan). Almost all the other kids are Beautiful Dimwits and obviously from well-to-do families to judge by their impeccable dress.
His family just moved from an urban neighborhood to the suburbs. Leonard, lonely and bored, finds the best way to avoid negative attention is to be invisible. Unfortunately, his first report card shows he's doing poorly in all classes (he takes the textbooks home and reads them in a night or two each).
Things look up when Alan Mendelsohn transfers in. The two smart misfits soon became the best of friends. Things are set in motion when Alan starts a riot and is suspended for a week.
On Monday, Leonard misses Alan at school and that night at his weekly appointment with his child psychologist Leonard applies his recent study of psychology and manipulates his shrink into making him take the rest of the week off of school. This gives the two boys plenty of time to explore Hogboro.
As I said, things don't start to get truly strange until about a hundred pages in. But the pacing is perfect. Every chapter is funny, and you are gradually set up for the climax, which has almost nothing to do with the Hogboro suburb and Bat Masterson Junior High where the story began.
Summary: Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars, is a masterpiece of comedy. I especially recommend it to anyone who feels that they don't fit in. Also, if you enjoy this book or any of the ones I listed in the literature section above, try out some of the other subversive authors. Their work is better than mos! t adult novels.

The world needs more subversive children's authors...

I am a Pinkwater fan from way back. So when I was bored, without any reading material at hand, I picked up this gem and read it. Pinkwater was still as great as I remembered, and I wish that I'd had this book in particular when I was in junior high. You see, I only now realize that I attended Bat Mastersom Jr High. Sure, it wasn't called that, but everything matched. Even from my current place in life, as a college sophmore, my junior high school experience is still a difficult question for me, and this book has helped me to put it into perspective. A must for any young person who is struggling with a world that won't accept them for their own strengths. We need more authors for catering to the intellegent youth, offering the message that even though your life seems so much harder than those who choose to remain ignorant, you can hold your head high, and you will be happier in the long run. Pinkwater deserves a spot next to Roald Dahl, Madeline L'Engel, Dr. Seuss, and the other greats of children's literature.

Best GED Test Resource Availabke

I just wrote a review of the basic Kapla GED Test book which included two practice tests. This is a more sophisticated version with extras such as an online test which very closely mimics the real test. I have been tutoring students to prepare for the GED and use this after intensive review using other materials. This is the ultimate final review before actually taking the GED.
Kaplan gives a money back guarantee if a student fails the GED after using this guide. The truth is that if this book is used properly Kaplan will never have to pay a dime. This is a well thought out package that provides the total GED experience. It is a wonderful resource. I have yet to have a student fail over the three+ years I have been doing GED tutoring.

Pretests, Practice tests, online videos, online syllabus, mobile access- No DVD, but lots of videos

This actually comes with online, book, VIDEOS (NOT DVD), and mobile. It LOOKS intimidating, and that's the worst part about it. I had to sit down with my son and look at the first few pages of instructions. I think the thickness of this book SCARED him. There's a pretest in the front, and that's actually the place to start and once I bookmarked that, he went right to work.

There's a website online, and don't worry about a lack of a code- on registration it will have you look up a page in the book and give a word that's easy to find. Then there's a shopping cart, but the balance will be 0.00 so there's no more cost. After the pretest is done, those scores get entered online. There's an online syllabus with videos to watch, testing tips and strategies, and more.

The book also helps with instructions on how to register and schedule your test. Since this book came out, in a lot of states passing scores have dropped from 150 per section to 145- if this includes your state, it will let you know that when you go to this GED testing site that the book lists. Just don't let the size of the book intimidate you. It's got 2 practice tests in it, and answer explanations and rationales and there's a lot of 'dead' space that just makes it thick, and lots of space for graphics.
I trust Kaplan. I got my nursing license using Kaplan's test prep, and I was so prepared that I blew through the test so fast I thought surely I'd missed a large segment of it somehow. All my instructors always said if you can pass the Kaplan practice tests, you'll have no trouble on the real thing.

More than passed the GED!

With the help of this massive study-guide, the GED Ready tests, the free educator's materials (sample essays, short responses and in-depth scoring) found on the educator section of the GED website, and the free Khan Academy math, I scored no less than a 182 on every part of the GED in only a weeks worth of study and two or years of previous traditional high schooling! I was so impressed with the quality and comprehensiveness of the material, I promptly ordered the KAPLAN ACT and SAT PREMIER guides as well. Though other people's results may vary from mine, this book played a large role in helping me to strive for the highest score I could possibly receive in only a week's time. Using the GED ready test as a pre-test, I managed to score around 20 or so points higher on each section of the real test after taking the time to practice and study. I recommend everyone who determined to pass the GED to utilize every resource at their disposal and carefully manage their time. I think that overall this Kaplan study guide makes a great place to figure out what specific topics you should be focusing your time on in order to boost your score. I honestly enjoyed my time studying with this guide thanks to the clear, concise layout and painless navigation. The book encourages and helps students to design a customized study plan to help student's focus on the areas in need of greater development. It includes a wide multitude of practice problems, detailed explanations, lessons, and more of this same kind of content online for a grand whopping total of A LOT of content! For the price, this couldn’t have been much of a better deal for myself either. Since I discovered that this book is much more than just a compilation of 'cheap' tricks to artificially inflate your score along with other fluff such as excessive motivational pep-talk (my experience with some previous study guides), I have high expectations for the other Kaplan guides! I can’t wait to tackle my next standardized test challenge with Kaplan’s guide by my side! It's all about the content!

"When marrying someone, remember: the good gets no better, and the bad only gets worse."

I cannot think of a better way to encapsulate the great theme of this book than the headline, which I have said to a few friends who have been thinking of getting married.

A relationship is not supposed to be that difficult, and the author discards the notion that relationships are about bargaining, compromise and hard work, and instead observing the type of person the other partner is.

Everyone in the world needs to read this book because it is simple, direct and valid with actual facts and figures that can be used. The author speaks of the "honeymoon period" of a relationship, wherein the prospective partner is putting their best foot forward, but after three months, their true nature begins to reveal itself.

It is this true nature on which one should judge their perspective partner.

The author then continues with a number or easily relatable examples of situations written with a sardonic, direct tone that does not try to sell the lie that has so often been posited that one should walk into a relationship accepting flaws and ready to bargain and compromise. Instead, this book argues we should focus on the flaws because they do not get any better through the course of relationship.

If people read this book, there would simply not be that many divorces.

Book teaches you as much about you

Looked this book as it was recommended to me by friends. I thought it was going to be a guide to examining the behaviors I encountered with others. While there is of great insight and advice there, I found it much more helpful in seeing my faults and the reasons behind them. I would recommend this book to anyone who is either in, considering or has fallen out of a relationship at some point in their life. Meaning pretty much everyone.

Best book I've read on relationships

I read "How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk" by the same author. When I was flipping through "How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk", it looked like the exact same book with just a different title. If it's not, then I apologize for this review.

The author introduces a RAM model which shows the sequence of steps you take which will lead to commitment. You have to do A before you do B. For example, you have to know someone before you trust someone. You have to trust someone before you get physical with someone, etc... When people are anxious for intimacy, they tend to skip over this and create a pseudo-intimacy which leads to a broken heart.

My favorite chapter is the one that deals with a person's conscience. The author warns that you cannot be someone else's conscience for them. You cannot be the angel on their shoulder that whispers to them to do the right thing. It's much better to pick someone with a healthy and consistent conscience in the first place so you don't have to worry about them mistreating you when they're out of your sight. My mom did this with my dad, always trying to keep him in line like he was her son. It didn't work. It lead to mutual disrespect and eventual divorce.

This is best book I've read on relationships and one of my favorite go-to books when I'm trying to decide if I'm moving the relationship too fast. Highly recommended.

Ride along as pure thrilling adventure is propelled firmly into the limelight.

THE SECRET OF SKELETON ISLAND sits firmly in the upper-most calibre of the juvenile mystery sub-genre. This novel—and its seventeen sequels—follows the exploits of the eponymous Ken Holt, and his soon-to-be buddy Sandy Allen. Refreshingly, the protagonists are neither self-styled amateur detectives, or innocent bystanders with a knack of getting swept up in adventures via coincidence; rather, the boys hail from the world of journalism in its macro and micro forms: Ken is son of globally renowned reporter Richard Holt, while in the sleepy backwater town of Brentwood, the Allan family operate the local newspaper.

This book is one-third adventure, one-third thriller, and one-third mystery, so it should be varied enough to entertain any reader no matter their vintage. Tales of smuggling and parental abduction abound in the Hardy Boys series, but rarely do they have the emotional impact as events here have upon our young hero Ken, who feels very alone in the world, palpably so, prior to his fortuitous encounter with the Allens.

Events are related via a breezy yet immensely varied prose, where one cannot but admire the author's talents. However, the pace does sometimes drag a little, and what the writing has in over-abundance (insofar as the richly textured descriptions), it perhaps lacks somewhat in failing to quicken the pace during the more eventful passages. However, this is a minor nitpick and other readers may find their mileage varies here.

All the good groundwork the author lays in establishing the characters, the plot, and the locations could have been neutered by a middling or mediocre denouement. But happily this is not the case: SKELETON ISLAND culminates in a rollicking good finale, where the mystery element is played down, propelling pure thrilling adventure firmly into the limelight. Ken and Sandy emerge triumphant from their ordeals and travails, and this reader for one was mentally applauding as he turned over the final page of a truly classic juvenile tale.

It's an Algebra book....at a great price.

It was required for my daughter's class, so I won't review the technical aspects of the book. However, I will say, it was over $140 cheaper than the bookstore was charging for it! Thanks Amazon - a used textbook - especially when it's not one you'll likely keep for a lifetime - is a great deal!

This book is ok. Algebra is not my favorite subject though. There's plenty of practice problems and reviews for the test. Overall I don't think you could find a better algebra book. This book and my teacher are keeping me passing so I am happy with what this book has to offer.
