About the Author

Ludwig Bemelmans was a painter, illustrator, and writer for both children and adults. His Madeline book rank among the most honored children’s book series. Madeline was named a Caldecott Honor Book, and the first of its five sequels, Madeline’s Rescue, won the Caldecott Medal and was a New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year. Lovely Book

I love the illustrations in this book, as well as, the story. Great for ages 4 and up. My daughter really enjoys the Madeline books. I do suggest though purchasing them hardback. I bought this one paperback and wished I wouldn't have.

There is simply NO WAY to give Bemelmans' wonderful illustrations and stories less than five stars

There is simply NO WAY to give Bemelmans' wonderful illustrations and stories less than five stars..if more stars were available I'd give him those too. No one else has ever captured the beauty and romance of the city for children as well as he.
The end papers and one illustration show the ile de cite, the pont neuf and the small park on the isle where now the tour boats are docked.
That's all specially meaningful to me because it is from the bridge and into the Seine that I threw the key to the lock I secured to the bridge,honoring the love my deceased wife and I had for each other. In the little park below my grandaughters husband proposed to her.

More Than a Half Century Later It's Still a Loved Book

Ludwig Bemelman's MADELINE first appeared in the early 1950s. It was a hit then and generations later, it still evokes that, "Please read it to me again," in children. Or better yet, it's one of those books that they later read to themselves.

Although most young kids don't know about orphans and living in an orphanage, they immediately bond with little Madeline. Children enjoy its cadence and rhyming (not at all like Dr. Seuss' books). It's less obvious and a bit more sophisticated.

Depending on a child's age and cognitive level, this book can go from simply entertaining (1) to broadening a child's knowledge (2), to higher order reading skills (3). Examples: (1) Reading a story; (2) What's an orphanage? Where is France? Do children speak English there? Tell me, what is the big, grey thing on the book's cover? (3) Do you think the girls are all happy to share a big bedroom? If you were Madeline, how would you feel? Why do we have an appendix?

Taken at face value, this classic is a lovely tale. But, it can also be a springboard for meaningful conversations.

Good Book! Kindle Edition Needs Work.

While I have no problem with the book, the Kindle version needs some work. You have to look at it sideways just to read it. It will not orient to my iPad correctly.

Oomph! Right in the childhood

Calvin and Hobbes. Oh, Calvin and Hobbes. Once upon a time, these two fantastic characters were my summer reading list. After buying one of Watterson's collections as a Christmas gift to myself, I can assure everyone that the dynamic duo is as good as it ever was.

Meet Calvin, a six year old kid armed with a massive imagination, a thirst for adventure, a crazy sense of fun, and a complete diregard for the consequences of his actions. His best friend is Hobbes, his anthropomorphic stuffed tiger (he's alive, and anyone who says otherwise is a liar!!!). Hobbes is the more down to earth, laid back, and interested in the ladies, wink wink. Together, they get up to plenty of hijinx, much to the chagrin of his parents, his classmate Susie, and just anyone he comes across.

Calvin and Hobbes is everything a good comic needs. It's funny, it's deep, it's enthralling. If you are ever going to read one comic, make it this.

A treasure trove for Calvin and Hobbes fans

As much of a fan of Calvin and Hobbes that I am, for some reason, I never knew how Bill Watterson came up with the names of his two title characters. When I looked it up, I learned that Calvin is named after John Calvin, a French theologian during the Protestant Reformation, and Hobbes is named for Thomas Hobbes, a 17th-century English philosopher.

Ranking up there with Charles Schulz's Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes is one of the most original comic strips ever created. Even though cartoonist Bill Watterson ended the series twenty years ago, Calvin and Hobbes is still remembered and loved by millions of people around the world. If you're somehow unfamiliar with Calvin and Hobbes, this collection of daily black and white and Sunday color comic strips is a great introduction, and it's a treasure trove of memories for a Calvin and Hobbes fan.

The book is on my Kindle Fire HDX 7" tablet, where it reads very well. After the first piece that's in portrait mode, the other strips read in landscape mode.

Oprah tiene una larga trayectoria en los medios de comunicaci�n de los Estados Unidos y para �ste libro reley� las columnas que escribi� para su revista "O" durante 14 a�os, columna que tiene el mismo t�tulo que el libro. Es un repaso de lecciones que le ha dado la vida, porque como ella dice en su introducci�n cuando en verdad sabes algo resiste el paso del tiempo o dicho de otra forma la verdad es eterna e inmutable.

Killer Maiden bio ! Great read if your a fan or even just curious to know more about one of the greatest metal bands of all time . I thoroughly enjoyed & recommend this book !

A must for any Maiden fan!

I have been a die-hard Iron Maiden fan since roughly 1990. Having read several interviews, articles, etc. about the band this book gave me a great insight into the world of Maiden like no other source has before. I already knew all the big, major stories of the band - how they formed, hooked up with their management, got a record deal, made it big, etc., but "Run To The Hills" offers a lot of detail into the lives of the various band members, how they grew up, when and how they started playing music and ultimatley how they ended up in the world's biggest heavy metal band. There's quite a bit of humor in this book, as well as some sad tales. If you are just a casual fan of the music, it's still a very enjoyable read and if you are a hardcore fan of Eddie and the boys like myself, you probably have already read this book.

Good, very good

If you are at all interested in IM, then you should read this book because it is worth your time. On the whole it is well written, informative, and there's little sense of "interference" from being the "authorised" bio of the band. Further, the text takes seriously each phase of the band's changes, and there's no sense of nostalgia or lament in it. It reads quickly; the band's success makes a compelling narrative. It would be 3 1/2 stars if possible, really.

So it's very useful as a general history, but there are a few drawbacks. First -- and this is specific to this edition, presumably -- other than the fine print on the title page, there's no indication that Mick Wall did not write the whole thing (thus making the authorial "I" of Dave Ling in Chapter 16 sort of deceptive/confusing). And the last few chapters, written by Chris Ingham, are decidedly inferior in the writing (lots of exclamation points!)and much too short. The book rushes to a rather anti-climactic close.
Second, there's very little discussion of the music itself, so if you're interested in what made the typical Harris "galloping" bass, for instance, you'll be no wiser. It didn't need to be a musical textbook, but when dealing with one of the more musically serious bands in rock, some depth might've been welcome. (There are a few mentions of "time changes" but that's about it.)
Third, even when reviewing the songs, there's very little explanation of the many references. How did Steve Harris, for example, who dropped out of school as soon as he was able, learn about Alexander the Great? Why was he so interested? How 'bout "Run to the Hills"? Where'd that come from? In the book the songs seem very context-free and there's little sense of the depth of the band's interests. There's also no mention of the controversy surrounding the awful "Dance of Death" cover.
This work was more "Fear of the Dark" than "Powerslave."
