The geographical basis of the case histories is worldwide, with examples originating from Australia to North America, from Arctic Canada to the Antarctic, from Europe to China. The level of mathematics and physics is kept to a minimum but is described qualitatively within the text. Particular attention is paid to geophysical survey design and line optimization techniques. A new textbook

The book covers the most important methods of applied and environmental geophysics as used nowadays. The descriptions of the classical methods is similar to the descriptions found in the classical textbooks. The major value of this title is the new material and the case histories which have never been published before, especially the ones focused on GPR.

Very good general overview

This book is the best overview of near surface geophysics that is currenty available. It is very light on theory, but is excellent for a first course in near surface geophysics or for a non-geophysicist who would like to expand their knowledge. I have read the book cover to cover over the last year as well as rereading some relevant chapters. There are some errors in the few derivations that are actually in the book. I have purchased six copies for co-workers who do not have geophysics degrees but work in the field. If you would like a deeper, more theoretical background get a copy of Applied Geophysics by Telford. With those two books you will be well grounded in near surface geophysics.

Great book! Very well written...and cheap! Not a common combination!

I have been using this book for my geophysics class now for over a month. It is very well written and easy to understand. Reynolds takes a difficult subject and breaks it down into easy to digest sections. It is in black and white, but color is not needed.

A view in the everiday lifes of ancient times

The new book by Katherine Dunbabin is a welcome addition to the already excellent catalogue of Cambridge Press. Ms. Dunbabin once more proves her value as a historian by showing that the study of Art in ancient times goes beyond aesthetics and the sphere of nobles and palaces. Her work on Section II "Technique and Production" brings to life the craftsmen and workshops that made the mosaics, but also the social relationships involved in the creation of all forms of Art. Another strong point of the book is the quality of the images depicted in it, both the photo reproductions and the graphic drawings of the mosaics are astounding. The variety of subjects shown in the mosaics allow the modern reader to have a pretty good idea of the ambiance and way of life of the times. It is also interesting that at the end of each chapter Ms. Dunbabin indicates a list of related bibliography with recent works. I can only be sorry that her own classical work "The Mosaics of Roman North Africa" is out of print. This pioneer work should be reprinted.

Great History but a major disappointment regarding images

I purchased this book to gain color references for the mosaics.....unfortunately, the majority of this book contains black and white plates. If you are planning on using this book as a reference for color, forget it.

A great look at the past

I had my fifth graders read this book and they loved it. They couldn't put it down. It's an excellent look at an all too unknown group of people in history--Black Cowboys. It's also a wonderful coming of age story. It comes highly recommended from the students of St. Malachy School.

A great book that teaches that you can do anything!

This is a great book about an African-American boy named Justin. Over the course of a stay with his cowboy grandfather, he learns that there is no such thing as women's work, you can do anything once you learn how, and a cool history lesson about black cowboys. My 4th grade students loved it and we had a great debate over whether there is a such thing as women's work!

Read along with your kids and talk, talk, talk

My son read this book with his 4th grade class. I read it along and out loud with him because we are really working on reading comprehension.

This is a terrific discussion-starter book for parents and children. Not only is there the sexism parts, but there is also the theme of Justin being never shown how to do things (or made fun of when he tries) to the extent that he just stopped trying.

I was very surprised to see the "n-word" (it's on page 82 in mine) in a book geared toward such young children. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but I would not have known about it if I had not been reading the book with my son. They did not discuss it in school or let the parents know which is a shame, as it led to a few great discussions in our home about racism and the power of words.

Overall, a great book. It was nice to see some diversity in my son's required reading and to have a completely boy-centric book where the main character is not sickeningly perfect.

This is a fantastic collection of stories that will have you at the edge of your seat. The writing is amazing and the stories don't rely on the supernatural or big monsters to get under your skin. A breath of fresh air in the horror genre.

Solid collection of scary stories

Solid collection of stories, ranging from the demonic to the sinister to the tragic. Some stories hinge on the supernatural, while others showcase the horrors of human nature. It's great to finally be able to support the author who has shared their work so generously with us on Reddit.

My two main criticisms are the portrayal of mental illness in one of the stories (I won't say which, because I don't want to spoil anything; but I'm tired of mentally ill characters being used as inaccurate and cheap scare tactics for neurotypical readers), and the fact that "The Dollhouse" is missing from the compilation.

- "Death at 423 Steerborn Street" (originally "Death at 423 Stockholm Street" on r/nosleep),
- "Who Killed Jacob Bennet?" ("Who Killed Sarah Cooper?"),

- "The Afterlife Experiment" - The dialogue in the beginning is so hilarious and well done that it's especially jolting when the scares kick in,

Was very good

I love this authors writing. The characters have depth and growth. The story lines are very convincing. You can feel what the characters feel and they mystery is there to keep you on the edge. I can't wait for the next book. The only reason this was not five stars was the end. There is a cliffhanger, but this is a long story and a family series.
Overview. Might have spoilers. Sophie is a performing artist. She's into dancing, drama, singing and acting. She puts it all out there and only does minimal for her other classes. So when she shows up late again to her econ class, the TA Luke Hawthorne tells her she has more potential and should focus on an education too. She is mad at "professor Sexy Pants". Luke even tryst to apologize for his behavior through an email. Sophie forwards the email to her best friend Danny, but Danny doesn't get it. Instead, professor Sexy Pants does and calls it to her attention while out at a public bar. But soon they find themselves lip locked in the bathroom. If Danny had not been in trouble, they would have went too far. End of the term they go their ways for a few weeks before summer classes start. But when Sophie shows up at the lake house to see her mom, she is shocked to know her mom was dating John. John has 3 sons who show up; Cash, Jimmy, And Luke aka professor Sexy Pants. They keep their relationship under wraps. That is until her mom decides that she was going to sale their child home and move in with John. Sophie and Luke storm off, Maddie, Sophie's sister and Cash rush off too. Everyone is fighting. (No reference to little sis Anna and Jimmy and what happens to them during the family fight). Madrid decides to be the Big Sis and call her sister Sophie and tell her about her and Cash and ask what happened to her and Luke. But will the future work for the 4of them when they meet up? Will they be able to resolve the family issue or will there be more surprises?

loved Luke and Sophie

I really liked Luke and Sophie's story. I really like their parents even less in this book than I did in Cash and Maddie's story, and I didn't like them then. I like reading how Colleen unlocks a little more of the two families' secrets in each book. It's like all the pieces are coming together with each added book. I hope they all get a truly HEA. I think this was a good love story. I received this free for an honest review, and like the other step books, I don't really find it a real issue that they happen to be related by marriage, not blood, and in this case not even by marriage yet. Yes, you have to overlook the fact that three sister and three brothers meet beforehand and then find out their parents are hooking up, but they are all sweet stories. All that said, I really liked Luke and Sophie even better than Cash and Maddie. I can't wait for Anna and Finn's story because it's pretty obvious we're getting one.

Blazing hot!

Sophie Porter is taking two weeks, before her summer classes begin, to visit her mother and sisters in Montana. Sophie can't forget her interrupted hook-up with her sexy professor, and is hoping that when she gets back she will be able to have her way with the man. When she gets to Montana she meets the man that her mother has been staying with, then she gets to meet his three sons. Sophie is floored when one of the brothers turns out to be none other than the sexy professor she has the hots for, Lukas Hawthorne. The first week ends with the three Porter sisters, and the three Hawthorne brothers angry at their parents and leaving Montana. After a week of sneaky, sexy trysts, Lukas drives Sophie back to her college dorm and disappears. I loved this book, it's fantastic!

All Aboard the Maverick Heart

Before I say anything else about this book, I'll start with this: If you love futuristic sci-fi action adventure served up with smart stories, well-built worlds, and just a dash of romance, you don't need to read the rest of my review, you need to grab this book and start reading.

But hey, if you want to humour me first, here we go.

The Maverick Heart is a sentient AI ship, one of the rare survivors. That sentient being, Vrick, travels the systems with Keene and Lexa-Blue, a pair who do what they need to do to get by and earn their living and freedom to travel the stars. When a former flame from Keene's past asks them for help (and doesn't take no for an answer), they find themselves enmeshed in the middle of a culture clash rapidly turning violent that could spell doom for a whole world.

Soul's Blood juggles a lot at once. The three main characters (I'm including Vrick among these, who is my new favourite AI ever) are all engaging in their own way. I freaking adored Lexa-Blue, the more "shoot first and then shoot second" of the trio, though I'll admit I'm a sucker for a kick-ass lady in my sci-fi. Keene is more of a "fixer" and technological in focus, and while his relationship with his former love is the starting spark of the story, he's not relegated to "romance plot" alone, and both men show clear growth from their days of young love; yes, they still feel the spark, but they're also grown men now, and one of them has the weight of his world on his shoulders.

I already knew [author:Stephen Graham King|1349557] could write solid space opera, having read and enjoyed [book:Chasing Cold|15866640], but with action, intrigue, tech, firefights, and just enough breathing spaces between the chaos, Soul's Blood brings an A-game.

Best of all, world building is artfully balanced. At it's heart, the main conflict of the story is one of culture: two vastly different races living on the same planet on the edge of a war that would devastate both sides. Keene's former love is a technarch of a highly technological society, and trying to stop attacks from a genetically modified people who have a vast array of psionic ability and a hatred of the technology that was used to create them. As Vrick, Keene, and Lexa-Blue learn more of the players and issues at hand, the reader is brought with them in a way that feels very natural. We learn about the specific planet in enough detail that it lives and breathes, and gain glimmers of the other systems outside that world in teasing ways that paint an enticing picture and leaves the reader ready for the next voyage of the Maverick Heart.

Soul's Blood

There’s lots of action in this new science fiction novel by Stephen Graham King. Soul’s Blood doesn’t begin with an explosion, but with a comfortable flow that leads to excitement. With rolling prose, Stephen settles you into the environment with ease and brings his characters alive.

Keene and Lexa-Blue are in the space shipping business. They haul merchandise through space from one port to another, but they also have a reputation for being very skilled fighters. Their ship is the Maverick Heart, but it’s more than just a ship. The Maverick Heart is also the body and mind of Vrick.

Think of Kitt from Knight Rider. Vrick is the ship. Ey thinks, ey talks, and ey helps Keene, Lexa-Blue and their friends. If Vrick was human, I imagine ey would wear a leather jacket and shades. Just like Kitt, Vrick is cool.

Keene’s former boyfriend, Daevin, is like the King of Brighter Light, a city state on another planet. Daevin wants Keene’s help in dealing with conflicts between two different cultures that don’t understand each other.

At first Keene is not so keen about helping Daevin, but eventually he agrees to, with Lexa-Blue and Vrick coming along. There is much conflict, a romance rekindles, friendships are made and mass destruction is witnessed.

Soul’s Blood was a fun read. I was impressed with the world building and I could relate to what some of the characters felt.

You have to have this Book:-)

I first took this book out of the library, loved it so much had to have it. It has literally change the products I use. Most appreciated is page 18 and 19's The science of the label. Its a beautifully done book with awesome photos, easy to follow formulas, and full of common sense about what "beauty" really is.

Love this book!!
A great source of information along with recipes. The book holds so much information, but presents it in a beautiful and easy to read/digest manner. The pictures are very nice and help to make you feel more aware of what you are using and how to use it.

I'm just very happy with this book. I checked it out at the library first and decided I had to have it. You might want to do that if you're not sure. YES.....it's that nice!

About the Author

Sanjay Govindjee is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley (1993-2006, 2008-present). His main interests are in theoretical and computational mechanics with an emphasis on micromechanics, shape memory alloys, and elastomers. Prior to joining Berkeley he worked as an engineer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (1991-1993) in Livermore, California. He was also Professor of Mechanics (2006-2008) at ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

Noteworthy honours include a National Science Foundation Career Award, the inaugural 1998 Zienkiewicz Prize and Medal, an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship, a Berkeley Chancellor's Professorship 2006-2011, and a guest Professorship at ETH Zurich 2008-2013.

A little misleading but wonderful recipes!!

This cookbook is very user friendly. There are loads of interesting recipes and some very nice mouthwatering photos. What is misleading in the book starts with the title! I have found VERY few recipes that have only 5 ingredients and many recipes take longer than 15 minutes. Aside from that, this book has a feature that is amazing! Every recipe comes with a shopping list of ingredients. Not only is that helpful for making a shopping list, it will also give you a product example making it that much easier to find the product you need for the recipe. There are many photos and as always, more would make this cookbook even better.

For this one in particular, we still have a small crowd of bookmarks sticking out for things we want to try soon. This book, and others of this genre, take the effort, intimidation, and hassle out preparing healthy home-cooked meals. We use ours regularly.

Wasn't impressed

This title is a little misleading. It is 5 ingredients on top of what they consider to be staples or on hand ingredients. So there are typically 10-15 ingredients per recipe.

I'm a simple girl when it comes to food. I like what I call "regular food." To me, this means typical food that most people, regardless of demography or geography, would be familiar with. I am also from a relatively small town, so I don't have specialty markets close by to shop for groceries. We have a Wal-Mart and a couple of regular grocery stores, so if most of the recipes call for scallions, shallots, phyllo shells, sun dried tomatoes, pickling spice, turbinado sugar, and so on, it isn't feasible for me. I'm not driving 50+ miles to pick up a jar of pitted kalamata olives.

If you live in a big city and you have a "refined pallet" with access to specialty stores and a Whole Foods, you might like this cookbook. If you are a regular person that wants a meal your whole family will eat, it isn't in this book. I have used and liked maybe 5-10 recipes in the entire book. Everyone is different in their tastes, and this was didn't really suit mine.
