At thirteen, Rachel Lloyd found herself caught up in a world of pain and abuse, struggling to survive as a child with no responsible adults to support her. Vulnerable yet tough, she eventually ended up a victim of commercial sexual exploitation. It took time and incredible resilience, but ?nally, with the help of a local church community, she broke free of her pimp and her past.

Three years later, Lloyd arrived in the United States to work with adult women in the sex industry and soon founded her own nonprofit—GEMS, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services—to meet the needs of other girls with her history. She also earned her GED and won full scholarships to college and a graduate program. Today Lloyd is executive director of GEMS in New York City and has turned it into one of the nation's most groundbreaking nonprofit organizations.

About the Author

Rachel Lloyd is the founder and executive director of GEMS, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services. She lives in New York City.

This book changes your perception and life within minutes

This book was tough read, but not due to lack of literary merit. It was difficult to read, because of the accounts of so many victimized girls and women right in the very U.S.A where we live. I stand firmly corrected that Sex Trafficking and CSEC (Commercially, Sexually, Exploited Children) is not a Thailand, India, Russia, etc issue. It is a human issue. Rachel Lloyd captures the anguish and torment of young girls in vivid details. I was moved to rage and commitment to take action. I will never be the same after reading this book. I highly recommend it for readings not just in an academic setting, but in churches, schools, or just personal knowledge and awareness.

I've only recently become much of a reader.
My ADHD usually gets the best of me--five books at a time without finishing one.

This book will keep you on target and glued to your seat--so ADHD people take note :-)

As a male, hopefully it will help you understand that prostitutes are not commodities that you can buy, sell, and then go home.
Just because you pay for the service doesn't make it a legitimate business transaction--for that to happen it would have to be good for both the buyer and the seller. Transactions for the services of a prostitute aren't good for either party. (I'm a male)

I don't think anyone wakes up and suddenly realizes they've accomplished their childhood dreams by becoming a prostitute. This book will not only drive that point out of the park, but more importantly, it will help you to understand that it happens for a variety of reasons--and none of them are good.

The worst part of the whole picture is what happens after the dollars have changed hands--and what happens to make the sale possible.

For the ladies, I'm not one so I'm not sure what to say except maybe have your man read it--he needs to hear the message. Internet pornography is pushing a tsunami whether you realize it or not. That's not what the books about, but that's where it's going without awareness. I think this book provides a great starting place to help make men more aware of how their actions could have a catastrophic impact on another human being and their family. If they look at pornography long enough, they will most likely act out--it's not harmless. If you suspect they watch it or you've caught them there's a pretty good chance it's happening more frequently than you realize. Google some statistics--men are hardwired for visual stimulation,and that's what can get them in trouble. Sorry for the rant, this is a book review--but that's my take on the issue.

Rachel, thanks for helping me to understand. May God bless and keep the girls you've helped save and the ones that haven't been reached yet. If Big Boys don't cry then I'm not a Big Boy--I wept like a baby, so thanks for the commercial interruptions you built into the book that allowed me to stop crying long enough to finish the book. Thanks for standing up in a world that would rather have you sit down.

Every once in a while, a book comes along that is so powerfully written, it has the ability to cause you to change how you think, how you feel, and maybe even: how you act.
For me, such a book is Girls Like Us: Fighting For a World Where Girls Are Not for Sale, by Rachel Lloyd.
I recently completed a 60-hour training course on Crisis Intervention, in order to work with victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and/or elder abuse. One of our sessions focused on human sex trafficking, and this book was recommended by our phenomenal presenter, who works with victims of such trafficking.
The session opened my eyes to the "top layer" of misconceptions around sex trafficking -- especially with regard to children. For example, I think many (most?) of us believe that only women from other countries are forced into prostitution here in the United States. Reading the book opened my eyes to the entire landscape of a devastating underworld that is closer to home than most of us realize.
Over 70% of all those forced into (and I do mean forced) sex work in the United States are Americans. This book, written by such a victim, who now works tirelessly as an advocate for these voiceless victims, puts a bald but factual face on the many "myths" surrounding those in the "sex trade." Just a few examples: that prostitutes choose "the life" (as it is known in the vernacular), that prostitutes are from low socio-economic backgrounds, that prostitutes are runaways, that prostitutes "do it because they like it," that prostitutes stay in the life because of the money they can make, especially when they have no other skills, that prostitutes are "asking for it" when they are beaten/raped/humiliated by their "johns" and/or pimps because after all: they should have known what they were getting into when they "became" prostitutes.
I read this book from cover to cover in two sittings, unable to turn away from it. It is passionately and compassionately written by a woman who has successfully led the fight to pass critically important legislation regarding sex work. One of the latest developments we learned about in our training was that - nowadays -- minors (boys and girls under the age of 18) do NOT have to prove they were "coerced or forced" into the trade. And this is because: by definition, a minor does not have the necessary resources or skills to resist being lured into the sex trade, especially when they are convinced they have no other option.
If you possess an open mind and an open heart, I promise this book will change you, and in very important ways. Even if you finish the book and simply change the vocabulary you use when referring to people in the sex trade, it will be a major step forward in the fight to stop human sex trafficking.
I am not a political person, and I rarely get up on a soapbox, but I will make an exception here. Tomorrow, Valentine's Day, is one that will be marked all over our country by people who are standing up against sex trafficking and violence in that world. It is called the "One Billion Rising," an international call to action that focuses on ending violence and sexual assault against women all over the world. For more information, please go to VDAY.org. The name of the event derives from the fact that human sex trafficking is a $1 billion/year business.

This is the first time since I began this blog that I am going to give a "current" book a 5-Worm Rating . . . . and believe me: it's not just because of the interest and passion it has stirred in me, but also because it is remarkably well written. I promise you will not walk away from this story untouched -- and in a hopeful way.

Kill the messenger-Slatzer is a hero!

Liar huh? Says Spoto, huh? Spoto is the liar, he must have been paid off, he left out a lot of information on MM-JFK-RFK he knew, some of this was found in his original notes, but left out of the book. He is the one who spun the lies to deflect away from the Kennedys and tried to implicate the maid and Dr. as the killers. Also garbage is that Dimaggio and Monroe would remarry. How is it no one knew about this, no caterer, no arrangements, no dress revealed by her designer Jean Louis, nothing. If Slatzer was such a liar, just how did he know so much in 1974 which has over the years been revealed by others. I saw a documentery with Slatzer, Jane Russell, and MM's first husband James Dougherty, all together sharing stories of her. Who is the liar here, Jane, James, or just Robert? Try and rewrite history all you want, now that the principles are dead, I am sure there will be attempts. Like it or not, Jeanne Carmen lived next to MM and knew her, as did Robert Slatzer. If you really want to know the real Marilyn and what happened, this was a ground breaking book, absolutely riviting. The first time I read it I was in shock, back then we didn't know what we know now. But, like I said over these past 30-40 years the truth has come out, so now who is the liar?

Best Marilyn book I have ever read

This was written by Marilyn Monroe's best friend and confidante. The book clearly shows that Marilyn was murdered, with believable evidence, autopsy reports and documented conversations from wiretaps. I don't know why people doubt Bob Slatzer's claim that he was close to Marilyn. Just because Marilyn wasn't public about their relationship, for whatever reason, doesn't mean that it didn't exist. Recently I stumbled upon a tabloid magazine from the 50's with an article about Marilyn and Bob Slatzer's affair. Maybe it was a secret because it was an affair. Bob Slatzer was portrayed in this article as Marilyn's secret lover, and apparently it was going on at a time when she was with Bob DiMaggio, so it makes sense that it was kept undercover, (no pun intended). It was undoubtedly true if back then, the paparazzi discovered the affair and published it in a 1950's tabloid magazine with photographs of them together. Marilyn was probably the one that wouldn't or couldn't go public with this relationship and Bob probably wanted the world to know,....and he did after Marilyn had nothing to lose. Their affair might have been short lived, but their friendship lived on. Bob writes this book knowing things only a best friend could know and shares these parts of Marilyn's personality with whomever reads the book. The book unravels the mystery of her death in a way that is so clear, that after having read the book, I have no doubts about what happened in the end. Bob tells the facts and lets you figure it out for yourself. This is the best Marilyn book out there. It is a keeper about the life and death of Marilyn Monroe.

THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ABOUT THE LIFE & DEATH OF MONROE

I wish this book would be reprinted. At the time it was first published it caused a lot of controversy. It has stood the test of time. Many people were "leery" of the assertions that Marilyn Monroe had been murdered,but since this author's long and trying efforts to show the real facts of what happened to Marilyn, many of the real facts he presented to the public in 1974 have been made public. Many people did not want or know whether to believe Slatzer's accounts of Monroe's keeping a diary, and recording her accounts of "what Bobby Kennedy told her". Recently released and published FBI & CIA documents "PROVE" that Slatzer was INDEED RIGHT ABOUT MARILYN & THE KENNEDY BROTHERS. A recently de-classified CIA DOCUMENT BOLDLY STATES THAT IN 1962, "THE CIA WAS AWARE THAT MARILYN MONROE KEPT A SO-CALLED DIARY THAT RECORDED CONVERSATIONS SHE HAD WITH THE THEN ATTORNEY GENERAL, ROBERT F. KENNEDY. THE CONTENTS OF HER DIARY DISCUSSED AMOUNG OTHER THINGS; THE PLOT TO KILL CASTRO; THE FACT THE CIA/GOVERNMENT HAD MAFIA HOODLUMS ON THE PAYROLL;etc. At least this author personally knew his subject and has made countless efforts to clear the smeared reputation the executives at 20th Century Fox Film Corp., gave her, as well as the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, and The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office placed on her. The Studio at the time of her death, did not make an effort to state they had in fact re-hired MM for "Something's Got To Give", along with the fact they had given her a raise in salary. The Coroner,The D.A.'s Office,and certain higher ups in the LAPD have kept closed mouthed about the truth of her murder and continue this ridiculous behavior today. Even former Deputy District Attorney, John Miner, who witnessed her autopsy,now admits, as Slatzer had written in 1974, that Monroe did not in fact, commit suicide, and DID in fact, have relations with the Both John & Bobby Kennedy and made recordings at the suggestions of her psychiatrist, Ralph Greenson, of said relations. This author is probably the most well informed and possibly the last remaining close confident that Marilyn Monroe had. If there are any more Biographies written on Marilyn Monroe, I hope that Mr. Robert Slatzer is the author.That way, we can set the record straight once again, and hopefully forget about the mis-information that people have been writing for the last 16 or more years.

About the Author
Kenji Tokitsu was born in Japan and began studying martial arts when he was a child. He has taught karate in Paris since 1971. In 1984, he founded the Shaolin-mon school, where he teaches a synthesis of the original combat arts of Japan and China. In 2001, he established the Tokitsu-ryu Academy (www.tokitsu.com) to teach and promote his method. Tokitsu also holds doctorates in sociology and in Japanese language and civilization.

Outstanding Study of Musashi

This is easily one of the best english studies of Musashi. Together with William Scott Wilson's "The Lone Samurai: The Life of Miyamoto Musashi", anyone could conduct a detailed study into the fascinating life, art, fighting method, and unique philosophy of this eccentric genius and in the process, walk away with a decent quality understanding of the history making events that occurred around the battle of Sekigahara and the siege of Osaka castle.

When I followed Musashi's travels in Japan, these were the two books I used to map my journey, and the understanding I was able to develop proved priceless as I traveled the old paths and visited villages, temples, castles, mansions, battlefields, and other locations largely forgotten. This book includes a very useful chronology at the beginning.

One thing I like about this book in particular is the inclusion of color plates of his art and calligraphy, of which he was a master of both. His art is accomplished using an economy of strokes to achieve an effect. He is also known to have held his brush like a sword rather than grasping it in the traditional style. Next to one of Musashi's Daruma works, the author states:

"We can follow every movement of Musashi's hand as he brought the gray line from center left up to the right, turned the brush swiftly at the shoulder and then pulled the line rapidly downward."

This is a very satisfying book that should please any Musashi fan, or that is certain to make a fan out of anyone who is unfamiliar with this incredible man. I can't recommend it enough.

The author has done an amazing (and detailed) job in unraveling Musashi's life, duels, and contribution to martial arts, from all of the myth and uncertainty of this enigmatic warrior.

The book covers Musashi's origins, his life as a warrior and an artist, and his impact on the evolution of swordsmanship and the modern martial art of kendo. The author also provides a complete analysis of Musashi's Book of Five Rings, as well as the legacy of his students and the impact that Musashi's work had on contemporary kendo masters.

This book is a must-read for anyone studying swordsmanship or martial arts.

Almost Like Being at the Premiere

Thomas Kelly's FIRST NIGHTS AT THE OPERA is bound to be loved by opera aficionados as well as people just beginning to be fascinated with a musical form that is both intricate and beautiful. Kelly selects five operas: Handel's Gulio Cesare, Mozart's DON GIOVANNI, Mayerbeer's LES HUGUENOTS, Wagner's DAS RHEINGOLD, and Verdi's OTELLO, and brings the readers to their premieres. Kelly gives us information about each composer, the story of the works themselves, a history of how each work was composed and the difficulties surrounding each production, the effect that each work had on the musical world of its day and how the work is still relevant today. We also get a good deal of information of the performance itself, those who sang the principal roles, the conductors, impresarios, and anyone else involved in the production. Much of Kelly's information is not unique to his book, though his presentation is original and his inclusion of interesting graphics and a number of relevant historical documents regarding each work make this work an invaluable resource. His writing style makes the subject approachable, something not all authors who attempt to write about opera can claim.

As I read the book, I began to long for December and the beginning of live opera broadcasts from the stage of the Met. The in depth analysis of each work presented in a user friendly format made reminded me of the intermission features which are presented during the radio broadcasts from New York's Metropolitan Opera House. These broadcasts introduced me to the world of opera and Kelly's book reminds me why I love this form of music so much.

If you love opera, you owe it to yourself to add this book to your collection. If someone you love enjoys opera, this book will be the perfect gift that will be enjoyed for years to come.

Pawol Lakay is a great learning resource

This book is an excellent way to learn the Haitian language for native English speakers and can be used independently, as I am doing, or in a classroom setting, which is the audience it was written for. It comes with both the text and audio CDs and I have been working through them with relative ease. My only criticism is that the audio and text sometimes do not match and which might be confusing for some. However, those inconsistencies are not very numerous nor terribly problematic and overall the lessons are great for learning the Haitian language. If you are interesting in learning to speak Haitian, I recommend this book.

Needed it for a class got here really quickly and very easy to use. The CD's are a help and at the back of the book I found the answers to the questions for the audio exercises at the end of the semester! :( Only downside sometimes the cd dialogue is too quick for even me a native speaker doing the course for college credit. Learnt a lot of new things.

About the Author

C. Augustus “Gus” Martin is associate vice president for human resources management at�California State University, Dominguez Hills, where he regularly teaches a course on the subject�of terrorism and extremism. He has also served as acting associate dean of the College of Business�Administration and Public Policy, associate vice president for faculty affairs, and chair of the�Department of Public Administration and Public Policy. He began his academic career as a member�of the faculty of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh,�where he was an Administration of Justice professor. His current research and professional interests�are terrorism and extremism, homeland security, administration of justice, and juvenile justice.

Dr. Martin is author of several books on the subjects of terrorism and homeland security,�including Understanding Homeland Security (SAGE Publications, 2014); The SAGE Encyclopedia�of Terrorism, Second Edition (SAGE Publications, 2011); Terrorism and Homeland Security (SAGE�Publications, 2011); Essentials of Terrorism: Concepts and Controversies (SAGE Publications, 2011);�and The New Era of Terrorism: Selected Readings (SAGE Publications, 2004). He is also author of�Juvenile Justice: Process and Systems (SAGE Publications, 2005).�

Prior to joining academia, Dr. Martin served as managing attorney for the Fair Housing�Partnership of Greater Pittsburgh, where he was also director of a program created under a federal�consent decree to desegregate public and assisted housing. He was also Special Counsel to the�Attorney General of the U.S. Virgin Islands on the island of St. Thomas. As Special Counsel he�occupied a personal and confidential position in the central office of the Department of Justice;�sat as hearing officer for disciplinary hearings and departmental grievances; served as chair of the�drug policy committee; served as liaison to the intergovernmental Law Enforcement Coordinating�Committee as well as to the Narcotics Strike Force; and provided daily legal and policy advice to�the Attorney General. Prior to serving as Special Counsel, he was a “floor” legislative assistant to�Congressman Charles B. Rangel of New York. As legislative assistant, he researched, evaluated,�and drafted legislation in areas of foreign policy, foreign aid, human rights, housing, education,�social services, and poverty. He also drafted House floor statements, Congressional Record inserts,�press releases, and news articles, and composed speeches, briefing materials, and legislative
correspondence.

     This unique, exciting book introduces “new media writing” strategies and techniques. Understand how to write and how to display content for websites, slide shows, and other visual presentations. Differentiate between viewers (who see words projected on a computer or projector screen) and readers (who read words on paper).

Introduction

      Within the last ten years, the practice of presenting written information on a screen rather than on paper has grown dramatically.  The essence of multimedia communications is its interactivity and the fact that you write in “layers” rather than a linear, traditional way. For those who may be “Trekkies,” I compare it to Mr. Spock’s three-dimensional chess game, which he liked to play on Star Trek. Unlike traditional chess, which is played on a flat, linear, one-dimensional surface, his Tri-D Chess is a three dimensional form of chess that requires its users to consider plays on a multi-dimensional platform. Not only must they consider the linear move in front of them, but they must also ponder the impact of those moves on separate, clear boards located above and below the main board.

 

     Each piece impacts a number of levels. Players have to remain aware of how every piece on every level interrelates. This reminds me of the challenge of multimedia writing. Not only must you ponder the linear story you must write on the main level, but also you must consider upper levels and lower levels accessible by hyperlinks or mouse clicks. You have to think about how each word connects to words on screens not yet visible. It is a form of three-dimensional writing that we are only beginning to comprehend, much less master.

 

     Each piece of information impacts a number of levels. Writers have to remain aware of how every level interrelates. The computer screen — through the development of websites and presentation software such as MS PowerPoint — is now used interchangeably with paper as an output device for information.

• ·        What types of information are more suited for output to the computer screen vs. paper?
• ·        How does reading information on paper compare with viewing written information on a computer screen (or projector screen)?
• ·        Should information be presented in the same way for paper as for the computer screen?
• ·        Are currently accepted multimedia emphasis techniques (such as moving text) enhancements or distractions?

 

     Research into these areas is new, but certain conventions have emerged. This book will examine the current state-of-the-art implementation of multimedia writing. About the Author

Barbara Moran spent 20 years in "mainstream news" (as editor of a city magazine and a weekly newspaper, on-air radio news reporter, and staff writer for San Diego Union and Atlanta Constitution). In 1989, she left traditional media to become part of the new Web-based media. She worked for two search engines as an online editor, and she has freelanced extensively online. She wrote The Internet Directory for Kids & Parents (IDG Books) and contributed a chapter on multimedia writing to English for Careers: Business, Professional, and Technical by Leila Smith (Prentice Hall). Founder/ editor of her own K-12 educational Website (www.specialspecies.com), Ms. Moran serves as a communications consultant and teaches Internet-, computer-, and communications-related subjects at the college level (at San Francisco State University and San Mateo Community College District). She has her B.A. in telecommunications from Kent State University and her master's in instructional technology from the School of Education at San Francisco State University.
