The Original "Odd Couple"

Being a huge fan of "The Odd Couple" television series, I finally decided to read the play on which the TV show is based. THE ODD COUPLE, which premiered in 1965, was Neil Simon's first big success. His writing is consistently amusing and often flat-out hilarious; I laughed especially hard during the first scene, in which Oscar Madison and his poker-playing friends are trying to prevent Felix Unger, just thrown out of his home by his wife, from committing suicide! This "episode" was, of course, the starting point for the TV series, but unlike the show, the play has a single plot: Felix and Oscar get together, quarrel, date the Pigeon sisters, quarrel again, and ultimately "break up." Though the play is a comedy, there are interesting parallels to A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE in Oscar's poker games, particularly the one in the last scene during which Felix leaves. THE ODD COUPLE is an excellent example of Simon's wit. Next, I would love to see it onstage!

When you pair David Paymer and Nathan Lane as Felix and Oscar in the Odd Couple, you are in for a comic tour de force that over stretches its material. With a supporting cast which includes Dan Castellaneta and Yeardley Smith (both from The Simpsons) and Linda Purl, the cast is almost perfect. This production is a little too visual in a few of its jokes. However, on the whole, it unscrupulously grabs the audio listener by his ears and shakes him with laughter.

Classic American Comedy.

Before the movie, before the television series, before all the spin offs, there was just the play. The story is a classic spin on the buddy plot. Oscar Madison is a successful sports writer who happens to be best friends with Felix Unger, a newswriter for CBS. Each week Oscar has five of his buddies over for a Friday night game of poker. However, on one fateful night Felix fails to appear in time for the game. It turns out Felix has just been thrown out by his wife and has no place to go. Feeling sorry for his old friend, Oscar invites Felix to stay with him and be his roommate. What ensues is a classic Neil Simon look at friendship that will endure for ages.

He intended to follow it up with a longer book, but was anxious to gain credit for primacy (which was questioned at the time and still remains controversial), and so published this short work in March 1850. It states Rawlinson's theories, and offers a linguistic and archaeological background to his work, along with his interpretation of king lists and other inscriptions.

Sam Gill's book takes an in-depth look at notions of Mother Earth as a crucial element in Native American theology. He finds evidence of myth-building that has more to do with self-serving Euro/American romanticism than authentic native culture. A very persuasive book graced with solid scholarship. I'm sure it didn't make him very popular in some circles.

Grade 4-6?Hannah is lonely after her best friend moves away from their Grand View, NY, neighborhood. Between September 1937 and July 1938, the girl writes volumes of letters to her new pen pal, Edward; her grandparents; Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt; and White House secretary Margaret "Missy" Lehand. Her correspondence to and from these individuals is the content of this introspective, leisurely book. The technique reveals Hannah's character nicely. Particularly effective is the description of her ultimate comedown?she misspells "restaurateur" in class and reports to Edward that she had to write the word 10 times. Edward's educational progress through Hannah's long-distance "tips" strains credibility, but her love-hate relationship with cloying Aunt Becky adds a note of humor. Historical texture is effectively woven into the book, with the difficulty of adults finding and keeping work a recurrent theme. Though the author explains in a closing note that the letters are fictional, Hannah's improbable correspondence with the Roosevelts adds dimension to historical characters and her voice is consistently clear and childlike. Still, Hannah is the same sensitive yet determined girl, though a little older and more independent now. She tells her own story through a series of letters. Spanning the months from the fall of 1937 to the summer of 1938, Hannah's correspondence includes letters to and from her Kansas pen pal Edward, her friend Aggie (who never responds to Hannah's countless letters), President Roosevelt (who always responds and sometimes sends stamps for her postage collection), Eleanor Roosevelt, Aunt Becky, Grandma, and an itinerant artist working for the WPA in Oregon. Not only are the letters lively and readable, they also offer a vivid picture of the period from Hannah's point of view. Though some will find the presidential correspondence unlikely, those who accept the premise will see it offers a broader view of Hannah's America. Enjoyable reading with one exception.

I enjoyed reading this book. I like the way the author allowed the reader to learn about Hannah through letters she writes and receives. The only thing that bothered me about the book was the use of S.O.B. close to the end of the story. I am a teacher and was reading this book because it is on the Bluebonnet Reading List for Texas. Unfortunately I know that we (the people at my school) will hear it from parents because of the use of this abbreviation. The book is wonderfully written, but I don't really understand the need for this type of language. While most kids know what S.O.B. stands for, I personally don't want to have to explain it to my own children or my students.

rediscovering the personal letter in the age of email

This is a stand-alone book in the Hannah series -- a charming book about a Depression-era preteen and her adventures in letter-writing. The book is composed of wonderful letters written to and from Hannah. In my world of no coincidences, I found and read this book during February -- which is the time of an online project that encourages one to mail something through the post on every day it runs (and to answer everyone who writes to you during that time) -- a commitment of 24 items in 2016. It's called the Month of Letters challenge. I was inspired by the delightful story of Hannah and her pen pals to take the challenge this year.

I found that this book was a very fun, sweet read. It's about a young girl named Hannah whose best friend moves away so she must find a penn pal. Eventually she has an entire (lengthy) list of pen pals. Everyone from her next-door neighbor to the secretary of FDR & FDR himself (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) This book is very entertaining and I enjoyed the correspondance between Hannah and all her friends. The book has a good portrayal of what life was like back in the 30's and the author does a wonderful job telling the sotry through the mindset of a nine to ten year old. This book is very fun and enjoyable. Hannah is a very spunky, sweet character and I especially enjoyed her letters with descriptions of people and places. There were a few things that were dissapointing in the book such as the fact that Hannah's old best friend never writes back to her but the overall story is much too fun and happy to dwell on those things. Overall this is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it!

Beautifully illustrated and brilliantly adapted , this book is sure to be treasured by all children who love Africa, both those who have grown up there, and those curious or enchanted by the wonder of Africa.

I grew up as an expat in Southern Africa and purchased this book for my child who is adopted from South Africa.Both of us have loved it~ I for the memories it evokes and the familiarity of the images and words, and they for the humor and what it teaches them about their homeland. A special shared experience as we snuggle and laugh together and enjoy Africa in rhyme.

Two minor points to note..
1-a glossary is not included, which is a shame as I imagine it would be quite helpful for those not familiar with the South African words or pronunciation, however most words are in english and I would certainly not let that put you off purchasing this special book.
2- There is a couple of images of witch doctors included which may put some people off ..a big deal is not made of them but I did feel it worth a mention.

Overall I highly recommend this book!!

This book is a wonderful reference. It describes the little (and inexpensive) things you can do to make your environment safer for your immune system. There are tables of reference. The ideas provided on cleaning products, personal hygiene, medical, are everything you need to know to help yourself.
It is short and condensed. You can read it quickly and use it for a reference for years to come. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to make their "space" a life-long healthier way to live.

We discuss many topics of Cynthia Fincher's book "Healthy Living in a Toxic World" in class and I have found that as a student I have only started scratching the surface of many serious issues. There are many things I didn't even think about until I enrolled in Ecological Psycology and Cynthia Fincher brought them to my attention. I strongly encourge everyone to read her book, it is very informative.
