Everything you need to know about this book

The book “...Isms Understanding Modern Art” by Sam Phillips is exactly how he himself describes it, “This essential guide to modern art explains all the key groups, styles, and schools that have shaped art from the late 19th century until today.” Phillips’ book can be understood by, informative to, and enjoyed by anyone. This book is somehow perfect for both the curious investigator to the experienced enthusiast.
Phillips has done something that I have never seen before; he somehow created a ‘introduction/how to use this book’ section that was interesting and very helpful. If you do read this book, read every page because Phillips gives every page meaning. Even the ‘glossary for useful terms’ was interesting to read. His writing style and use of interesting information and examples, seeps into all of his words.
The main body of the book informs the reader of different styles and genres of modern art in an interesting way. Every ‘ism’ has at least one picture example of the style. Each example shown is talked about in detail and is used to help the reader understand the style by using the example as a guide. With the body of the book being more informative than entertaining the format resembles that of a textbook. It does not feel like you are reading a textbook though, it just that it is so organized and helpful. Each section follows another in chronological order in history which shows you the evolution of modern art. The order also shows you how previous ‘isms’ influenced the following.
Phillips does a great job at, in a detailed yet understandable way, opening the reader’s eyes to each style of modern art. After reading each section I felt I understood the artist’s purpose and became connected with each ism. I wanted to find more modern art and identify the style and purpose after reading this book. I wouldn’t do this to seem smart or feel accomplished. This book makes you want to connect the art to its ism so you can fall in love with art that you may have walked by.
Overall, the book is not too informational as to be boring and blunt, yet is not too biased and uninformative as to sound informal and opinionated. I enjoyed reading it and I found the knowledge I gained from it not just beneficial but perspective changing. The book is not too long; it's only 157 pages. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, even those who dislike modern art. This book was enjoyed by one of my friends who is a modern art enthusiast, who recommended it to me, a person who disliked modern art. I started to read it because I was curious about the topic, but then I couldn’t stop because it was so interesting. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Untangle and Define Modern Art!

What a pleasurable way to untangle and define modern art movements! One can also see how one movement leads to another, how they overlap, what happens when rebels go off on their own. It's in my bathroom... frequent reference has strengthened my understanding of modern art and this truly enhances any museum lark upon which I embark. Get it.
