For Advertisers and Copywriters

The elements of true Copywriting from the man who brought the names of products into your household that you use everyday. WIthout qualifications, degrees, Hopkins was astute enough to use an analysis or method to measure the reaction of the user of the product. He put people first because he was just an ordinary person.

The use of the term "scientific advertising" is to make the advertiser feel more comfortable pushing papers around to make money. The advertiser represents the seller and the Copywriter represents the consumer.

Hopkins, the Copywriter, the one who writes the copy for the advertiser, represents the user the person who puts the bread and butter on the table of the advertiser. Contrary to Corporate opinion you don't need a college degree to be a Copywriter. The two greatest faults in advertising are boasts and selfishness.

If you are a seller advertising your products and services this is the book written for you.
If you are a Copywriter writing the copy you'll recognize yourself in the text. Like Hopkins, you understand confidence in the product and confidence in the people.

Larger than Life - yet human

Many detailed reviews on the virtues of this twin book have been already posted here. I doubt I can add to them in any meaningful way. I will just add my perspective.

I am new to the world of advertising, having taken up direct response copywriting as my new career. I am awestruck at the level of sophistication practiced by Hopkins and the array of new techniques he had invented that are still being used today.

I only had a chance to complete the first book, My Life in Advertising, the biographical version. I am working on the second part, Scientific Advertising.

While we all respect Hopkins for for his contribution to the industry, it was touching to read his reflection on his own career, wondering about the peaceful life he could have had as opposed to his chosen path of workaholism that enabled him to rise to such heights. The human element is always there.

Fantastic Advertising Book: The Real Deal Without The Smoke and Mirrors..

The best direct response marketers cannot give this book enough praise and I can see why.. This is the basics of which every great campaign is built. If you don't have this knowledge then you are on shaky grounds. It is based on common sense, which is what most ad agencies try to remove from the evaluation process regarding campaigns.

In the end of the day, any ad should pull enough profits to justify the cost of running it. And if you are not measuring it, or just "branding", how would you ever know if you are getting your money back vs flushing money down the toilet?

If you are a business owner, read this book before ad agencies and other sneaky media sales reps takes your last dollar.. And don't believe in the branding BS, unless you are Coca Cola and have distribution in virtually every location thinkable.

David Ogilwy, which is probably the most famous ad-man in the world, said that every serious advertiser should have read this book at least 7 times. So do yourself a favor and read it at least 3 times. You will thank yourself later (and hopefully read it another 4 times)..

It is interesting to see how a book this old, can still be as relevant today almost a 100 years later..

James A. Speck, PE, worked as a regional manager of The Johnson Gage Company, Bloomfield, Connecticut, following a career in the fastener industry. He has trained and served as a technical expert in the Department of Commerce’s National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation program for fasteners and metals; presented numerous workshops and seminars on fastener fundamentals, fastener applications engineering, and screw thread technology; and authored numerous publications. He received his BS (1971) in business administration from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and an MS (1974) in management from the Hartford Graduate Center, Hartford, Connecticut, and he is a licensed professional engineer in Connecticut.

If you are going to collect or sell records you have to have DEADWAX

A very valuable book for collectors who want to know whether they are collecting the original record, or are collecting non-original pressings made by some other record company to look like the original--called repros. It's OK to want a $300. mint original record if that's what you want. Unfortunately, some collectors think they own that $300. record when they don't. The record seller could be a crook out to make a buck, or he could be ignorant and really think he has an original. This book solves the confusion. Now collectors can verify that their collections are originals and are worth what they claim. So far this is the only book that can assist the record buyer in purchasing what he wants--Original or repro. It also gives the seller a tool in which his inventory of records will be labeled and priced accurately. Before Dead Wax collectors did not know what to look for to determine if a record was original or not. A must for all record collectors and record sellers!!

VALUABLE BOOK THAT NEEDS MORE RECORDS INCLUDED

A worthwhile book as far it goes. I was able to find several of my very valuable records in the book. However, many valuable records were not included. I hope the author writes a 2nd edition and includes many more valuable records.

The service provided by this book in very much needed. Too many record sellers today are selling "bootleg" records on e-bay and passing them off as original pressings. This book would make it much more difficult for them to get away with this unethical practice. Also, because of the information provided in this book ethical sellers will be able to authenticate their valuable records prior to selling them.

Totally not very happy with the entire book

For the price I found this book to be so so and not very informative, considering the number of records out there that may be counterfeit. The explanation on the different variations were cloudy and also I could not find the email (told to email for changes) in the book. Totally not very happy with the entire book. It seems to have had more advertisement than information.

Remarkable Book Filled with Relationship Ideas.

Chad Stone has created a remarkable book for all women, young and old, whether they are in a relationship or looking for one. The Love Magnet Rules is uplifting and heartwarming, full of information and illuminating stories that help illustrate the 101 tips he presents. (It's also a good book for men.)

I found this book easy to read and quite interesting. It’s a wonderful reminder of how we should treat others, especially people we want to be close to—friends, lovers, partners, and spouses. It also offers ways to be kinder to our family and coworkers, covering social do’s and don’ts along with effective social media tips. While the topics in the book are geared toward helping us to find (and keep) that special someone we can share our lives with, I also found the tips helpful for me to better myself—and utilize what used to be called “common courtesy.”

I highly recommend this book for everyone, but especially if you’re looking to find a relationship or improve the bond with your current partner.
