Less is more, more or less

I thought this was fascinating and comprehensive overview of Braun and Dieter Rams contribution to the success of the company though I think it has a quite a serious editorial flaw.

The publishers have been quite clever in accommodating the huge amount of text and graphic material in a book of just over eight hundred pages. The text, German on left-hand pages and English on the right, has been printed on very thin paper (known as bible stock in the trade) which has a certain amount of show-through. The excellent product shots (314 pages) have been printed on a good matt art with another paper used for the remaining photo essays. Incidentally the color work in the book is printed with an impressive 300 screen, most art books run to 175 to 250.

Eleven of the nineteen chapters are text (on the thin paper) and explore in as much detail as you could want about German and middle European design in the first decades of the last century and how it influenced Rams, particularly the Bauhaus and Ulm design laboratories. A fascinating sixty-five page chapter: 'Dieter Rams, Braun, Vitsoe and the shrinking world' explores the reasons for the companies success and Rams contribution with brilliant product design. Another chapter: 'Graphic design: Braun and Vitsoe' delves, in part, into the typeface used on the products, always in lower-case and originally Akzidenz-Grotesk but after the sixties switching to Helvetica.

Between the essays and possibly the main strength of the book are the photo product pages, basically electrical products for the home. Each item gets a spread of lovely close-up photos butted together and then a spread with a head on shot on the left and each right-hand page having relevant profile photos. Here, unfortunately, I think the book falls down (and why I've given it four stars) because these photos are just too small and made more noticeable because the rest of each page is blank. Matt black was a design element for many of the audio products and to see them basically as small silhouettes with the detail of the fascia, side and backs near invisible seems a nonsense. To have all these product shots this small is just a book designer's whimsy and doesn't do the reader any favors. There are other photos essays of Braun products (including fourteen pages of ones that didn't make it) brochures, packaging, Dieter Rams home.

'Less and more' is an impressive book (apart from the small product photos) and could well become the standard work on the company for design students and those who appreciate good product design and want to know about a man and company that created such high standards. There is another book about the company that might interest you: BRAUN--Fifty Years of Design and Innovation basically product shots with a very comprehensive listing of these in the back pages.

A must for fans of Dieter Rams and Braun.

Beautifully printed soft-cover book with thin board slip case. I have several books on Rams and Braun, but this one is almost certainly the best. The main focus here is on Rams with examples of his work for Braun and other companies. Beyond beautifully photographed examples of Braun classics, the book also looks at sketches, prototypes of unrealized products, and even engineering models for some items. Highly interesting with well-written text in English and German.

One of the best books I now own. Every design freak like me must have this. Simplicity is elegance was the thrust of his work, and nowhere have I seen it taken to these levels. His work has obviously influenced many in his field. It's easy to see the influence in apple's design, for example. Buy this book. Uncluttered, beautiful design at your fingertips.

Best textbook I've read yet!

So easy to understand and this is coming from someone who was HIGHLY anxious that I wouldn't understand the material. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and I especially liked the charts and graphics. There's a flip page in the middle that is on transparent paper that is really cool for showing step by step how the balance sheet, income statement, adjustment sheets etc all effect each other. And the clear pages help you see the step without the distraction of the next step. It's sort of hard to explain but I really loved accounting because of this book. Others that I'd tried were so bland and boring to read. Also the book is tall and thin-ish, and has lots of appendices and examples next to and after the text so it's way easier to get through seemingly long reading assignments.

Good Resource on Financial Accounting I

This Fundamental Accounting Principles textbook was very well done. It's the 17th edition and like all textbooks having gone through so many editions, benefits from extensive editing. It may be a lost gem because I don't see that it was updated after 2007.

This 1,132 page hardcover text was widely used and had everything one would expect in a financial accounting I book. The Kieso series became dominant but this remains a great textbook. I use it as a resource because I occasionally teach a university accounting course, particularly financial accounting I. The explanations and problems are with few exceptions still fresh and relevant. It's too bad it uses the previous year's Krispy Kreme financials since that company fell from glory.

I'd recommend this text to anybody needing additional resource materials. It remains excellent.

I bought this book because I am taking a course online and the company still uses it. Further, the hardcopy was surprisingly cheaper than the E-book...Well, there is a simple reason for this and I believe that this book should be sold for 1$ today, since it's out of printing! Hence, you cannot check the problem and test results online. How great!
In sum, this 5kg book is doing its job and it's pretty easy to follow - yet, companies/ed. centers should start either using the newest edition or providing the results.

Olajuwon is the all-star center for the two-time, defending NBA champion Houston Rockets. His life and perspective on his career, however, are far different from most superstar athletes: born and raised in Nigeria, Olajuwon never touched a basketball until he was 17. Spotted by an international basketball scout in Nigeria, Olajuwon was offered a chance to come to America if he would accept a basketball scholarship. It was a no-brainer to a middle-class kid from Lagos who, along with his family and peers, viewed America as the promised land. After success at the University of Houston, it was on to the pros, where he was the first player chosen in the college draft, two spots before a fellow named Michael Jordan. Though much of this account is standard sports-bio filler--"We then played the Celts with their great front line" --what sets the book a notch above the competition is Olajuwon's cultural perspective. Something as simple as the omnipresence of ice water in Houston restaurants made a lasting impression on a skinny kid's first visit to the states. And despite his wealth and success, Hakeem still retains a lot of that skinny kid who thought he'd died and gone to heaven when he landed in Houston. A sure hit with NBA fans young and old. The Best Book That I Have Ever Read

When I was reading this book it felt like I was sitting next to Hakeem and hearing him tell it. I have read it four times and it got better each time. I learned so much about Hakeem. When I was done it felt as if we were best friends. When I say that this is the best book that I have ever read, I am telling the truth.

As of yet I haven't read this book, (but soon will). I am a BIG Olajuwon fan(atic) who had the privledge of seeing him at his best many of times at MSG doing his thing and playing his heart out. Lets remember this is the man who brought the "DREAM SHAKE" to life in the NBA Finals against P.Ewing, NY KNICKS and Co. and took the glory from the NYK, as the "DREAM' continued, he shut down a young SHAQ single handedly as the ROCKETS swept the Orlando Magic in 4 outta 7 games. Look the man up in sports history, he's also the last man to accomplish a quadruple double, since there are only like 6 NBA players to do the feat, that should tell you something about his on court skills. He came to the states (Texas) with only soccer and handball as his only sports games played, landed in Houston (Cougars,NCAA/Rockets,NBA) and took off like a ROCKET never looking back. This is the one/only athlete I wish I had the privledge of ever meeting. The DREAM was a genius on the hardwood, and with the crazy schedule of the NBA, diff. cities, two countries and all the traveling this man still was true to his religion and adhered to Ramadan faithfully. Excellent Biography of the most humble star in the NBA

Hakeem is indeed a "Dream Role Model", and takes that responsibility very seriously. This is really a page turner, that keeps you from putting the book down, which is unusual for an autobiography.
Hakeem details some rather amusing parts of his rise to NBA star-dom, and provides some rare insight into what goes on behind the closed doors of the NBA (often very negative, and cash is king mentatlity).
I must admit that I did read this book hoping to gain some insight into his devotion to Islam, and I was not dissapointed. I admire Hakeem for his devotion to Islam first, and as a basketball player second.
Contrary to a previous post, Hakeem is not Proselytizing (trying to convert others) he describes his re-discovery of Islam very matter-of-factly. And anybody that follows Hakeem in sports knows that Islam is the main driver in his life.
Great book, its too bad it is out-of-print, but at least pick up a used copy while you can.

Nice Reproduction

This is a nice reproduction of a book from c.1656 but I didn't find it helpful. I think I was hoping it would be more of the "Brother Cadfael" type knowledge. A better, modern book on herbs would be more useful and safer, too. But, as I said, it is an interesting book to have on the shelf.

A book this outstanding is rare, as I can see from the customer reviews many have perceived. Paglia's book, which I read when I was 17, crystallized my thoughts on art, sexuality, and human nature: like her I was a freakish female fan of Oscar Wilde, the gay male sensibility, and decadence. I had truly been searching for this book since I was 13 years old and got my first adult public library card, and thereby discovered the endlessly fascinating world of literature and art--the existence of which I'd never suspected. I'll never forget sitting down with this book during Grade 12 Spring Break; my mother and little sisters were away visiting relatives, so I had the house to myself during the day and I sat in the dining room from the time my step-father left for work at about 7 am to the time he returned about 5 pm, reading. It was by far the longest and most difficult book I had ever read, and I took time over it because as other customer reviewers have pointed out, Paglia addresses such profound, disturbing ideas in such original, provocative ways that I did no less than go over my whole life in my head from my earliest memories to test Paglia's ideas. Needless to say, Paglia won more often than not: the myth of original sin is a better explanation of art and human nature than the myth of social constructionism.
If you are truly open to ideas and you love art, don't read this book unless you want your life completely changed for better or worse. Almost ten years later I find myself completely intellectually alienated from both peers and most professors in my university English program because I continue to fight UNCOMPROMISINGLY for art and independent thought (not to mention intellectual rigour and standards and good prose!), thanks to Paglia's inspiration. But it makes it worthwhile when I come on amazon.com and see that others have felt the same way I do. For you others, if you're looking for other *special* works of criticism (neither the run-of-the-mill merely accurate kind nor postmodern drivel), I recommend George Toles's A House Made of Light: Essays in the Art of Film and Stanley Cavell's Pursuits of Happiness: The Hollywood Comedy of Remarriage. If you read them after Paglia you'll have some balance, too, since Toles and Cavell emphasize the link between art and morality, while treating the subject with the complexity it deserves.

Caveat Lector!

First Off: There's no way I'm going to cram into a thousand words everything I feel I need to say about this book. Thus, I'll stick to what I regard as the bare bones of its import. The first thing you have to realize is just how much Paglia owes to her mentor, Harold Bloom. I would strongly advise any potential readers of this book to read both The Visionary Company and The Western Canon before embarking into this scintillating morass, however unrealistic an expectation that may be.
This book, despite all the lip service given to the "Appolonian," is deluged with the Chthonian, and the reader will come away from this tome besplattered with the mud and slime of the swampy Chtonian Nature of the world than anything else. Mind you, there's nothing contradictory in this result. It is indeed just what the much-praised Appolinian artist does, according to Paglia: Reveal the Chthonian with a voyeuristic, Spencerian eye. This Paglia does with an elan and flair unmatched in critical writing.
But beware! Paglia, like Bloom, is reductionist. Bloom's ultimate take on more or less the same subject matter with which Paglia treats is Gnosticism, thus ultimately spiritual. Bloom sees a sort of warfare going on between the earthly and chthonian and the spiritual. He resolves this in Gnosticism, an heretical sect that flourished in the early centuries A.D. and maintained that this world is evil, created by a "demiurge" and that the visions of poets like Shelley are nothing less than emanations from another realm. For Paglia, all this is sexual, and Bloom would not deny a sexual element in all of it, but he goes a bit further in explaining it. Prime example: Paglia's "womb/tomb" of the Chthonian is simply a given. In Bloom, it is the prison of our Fall fom the Gnostic other realm. It fits into a cosmology.
There's a very weird realization that comes over the reader (at least this reader) when we come to the Coleridge section on his poem "Christabel" and the vampire Geraldine and continues creeping over him or her until the final chapter on Emily Dickinson. I know no other way of saying this than that Paglia BECOMES Geraldine to the reader. - I agree with her that Emily Dickinson is an extremely powerful and misunderstood poet and, indeed, have spent several ultimately worthwhile hours poring over her short poems to discover the sexual/spiritual depths. But, sorry Camille, Dickinson is just not another Sade altogether. But in the way Paglia presents her, with Sadean snippets of her poetry, the reader who is unfamiliar with the rest of Dickinson's work cannot fail to come away with this conviction. - For the record: I think part of Dickinson's persona is sadomachistic, but it is only a piece of a complex puzzle.
What we are witnessing and in danger of becoming engulfed in (It happened to me.) is Paglia' own mythopoecism. At some point between Christabel and Dickinson, Paglia becomes the subject of her work. We fall in love with her (I did.); but in the way that Christabel does with Geraldine. She lures us into her own imaginative fixation on the Chthonian womb/tomb of the female, and we identify HER with IT.
In conclusion, READ THIS BOOK, if only for the transformative effect it will have on you. In the last page of the book, Paglia says of Emily Dickinson that "She is frightening!" Yes, Camille,.....YOU ARE!

Invaluable resource

The third edition of Wolverton is a substantial improvement over what was already a superb resource. I can think of no other reference book that touches it for dermatologic medications. I particularly appreciate the details on mechanisms of action and the balanced, nuanced discussions of adverse effects.

The chapters have been edited to limit repetition and some of the more egregious typos have been corrected -- although this book is still remarkable for the apparent lack of proof-reading. But misspellings certainly do not negate its value.

Wolverton's book is a classic in dermatology, and this edition is no exception. I especially appreciate the online version that can be accessed anywhere you have internet on any device. It is a complete version of the book, with the advantage of search.

Like having the greatest minds in the history of jazz opened up in front of you...if you're willing to put in the time to study.

This is an excellent collection of transcribed solos for study and analysis. I like that the transcriptions are taken from a broad range of instruments and across the entire spectrum of jazz history. I hope, and I can easily see, how this book could carry over for several volumes much like the Hal Leonard Real Books. To break it down:

-42 sax transcriptions
-35 trumpet/flugelhorn/cornet
-26 piano
-19 guitar
-10 bass
-8 trombone
-6 vibes
-1 flute
-1 harmonica
-1 violin

As a piano player I also appreciate that the left hand is included in the transcribed piano solos instead of just the melody.

Furthermore, there are songs that are represented more than once with different soloists, so you can see how different soloists approach the same tune. For example..I really like seeing both Herbie Hancock's Dolphin Dance along with Ahmad Jamal's take on the same tune. You get Miles, Jim Hall, and Herbie Hancock's solos on the tune My Funny Valentine..and a few other instances where multiple transcriptions of solos for one tune are included.

I should also mention that there is a review here stating that the source of the transcriptions is not listed...this is not accurate. In the beginning of the book right after the table of contents there is an index by instrument that also shows the recording the transcription was pulled from. I nearly let that erroneous review steer me away from this book as that would've been a tragic oversight..I'm glad I didn't

Overall this is a very well put together book with tons of ideas to be pulled and internalized in order to be made your own. With careful study and analysis this is a treasure trove of jazz language. And don't be afraid to explore solos outside of your instrument! This book isn't meant to take the place of doing your own transcriptions as this book only takes a microscopic slice out of an enormous history of jazz, but it is certainly nice to have all these great solos. Bravo..and I'm certainly hoping there are more volumes released in this series.
