We use this book in my Psych 100 class as a supplement to our textbook. It is really helpful and reinforces everything we learn in class and in our normal textbook. The author is very clear. There are a lot of quotable lines in the book that make you sound smart when you use them in class.

A Book that keeps on giving

I have read this book several times. It amazed me in my teens and still amazes me now that I am a grandmother. This is a book that helped me know my body and appreciate it. The writer has helped many Christians appreciate and enjoy sex for I have given copies of this book to many of my friends. This book has also helped husbands satisfy their wives and have wonderful families.

Still a great book today

Read this book many years ago when our family was young. Wanted to share it's wisdom with the youngest in the family as she prepares for marriage. Re-read it; still grateful for the author's beautiful presentation of God's gift of femininity.

concisely helpful, a welcomed change of perspective

This book is very to the point. Trobisch doesn't drone on and on in explanation, but what she relays is succinct information about how a woman's body is built and how to best face the different phases of life as a woman. She also integrates Biblical principles, which further support her conclusions.

She writes to encourage, not only women, but men as well, specifically challenging "brave couples" to read it together. A woman's sexuality is not to be a mystery to her husband, and this is clearly communicated. The intimacy of a married couple is to be experienced together, and it doesn't just happen in the bedroom. Intimacy, conception, pregnancy, birth, breast-feeding, and menopause are all discussed separately. Each referenced study and book are compiled in a list at the end.

Trobisch wrote this book after having passed through the stages of womanhood, enjoying each step of the way. For the woman who would like to learn more about these subjects without being bogged down with the hundreds of pages of most women's books, and would like a Biblically-based approach, I recommend reading "The Joy of Being a Woman...".

The idea for 1-2-3 Va-Va-Vroom! came to Sarah when she was teaching her oldest son to write numbers. They began imagining the pencil as a car drawing its own track. An Effective Langauge Series

The Expressways series of textbooks is designed to accelerate an English student's language mastery through exercises that teach visually through reading, tactilely through writing, and audibly through speaking. The student's abilities mature through practicing these skills for proper mastery of the English language.

My wife is a Chinese native who recently began English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at our local high school. The instructor uses these textbooks as the primary tool for learning. We have found them to be an effective and fun way to learn together as a couple and it has helped her language skills and personal confidence.

The exercises in the textbook are designed for a classroom setting or, if a classroom is not available, for practice with a partner. My wife benefits through classroom interaction twice a week and by working with me.

It is very important the student is able to work with someone to practice the lessons in the book. I would strongly suggest purchasing the companion workbook that accompanies this textbook for added exercises. There is also an audio component to this series that can be helpful, but if the student will be in a classroom or can practice daily with an English-speaking person, the audio is not necessary.

The conversational lessons in the textbook use iteration to teach. The student practices scripted conversations with a partner and phrases are changed to vary the meaning. The conversation remains similar each time, which reinforces the language structure, and the student learns through familiarity and practice. This is a crucial component to the learning process.

In addition to the interactive components are lessons that teach the correct grammatical structure of English sentences. Lessons force the student to think about what they're saying and practice the rules and logic in their mind before selecting the best answer. These grammatical lessons are reinforced through the practice conversations.

I would recommend the Expressways series for anyone who wants to increase their English mastery, but it is vitally important the student has a partner to assist with the lessons. This is best accomplished in a classroom setting at least once a week and/or with a friend or loved one close to the student. This is not a self-study textbook. While some of the lessons are accomplished alone, the real learning comes through verbal interaction and practice.

If you do not have access to a classroom or study partner, purchase the audio component along with the textbook and seek-out English speaking people to talk to.

With time, persistence, and practice, your English skills will increase, and the Expressways series of language textbooks will help you accomplish your goals.

I'm a big fan of Larry McMurtry, and am amazed at the amount of quality material he has cranked out over the years. Be it with his "Lonesome Dove" series, or his more contemporary novels such as this one, there always seems to be parts of the story that make one despair about life in general. There is usually death of some kind. While many authors will write something 'redeeming' about a death, McMurtry will tend to show the stark fact that life goes on, and often a death is indeed a big waste. Cruel as it sounds, it is probably more real than we'd like to admit, and for that, I like his work.
While this novel doesn't contain the wholesale slaughter of his westerns, there is enough pain to carry the story in his manner described above. What makes the book great is how he takes a pair of characters who are not that pleasant a couple, and makes us really care for them. Aurora, the widowed mother, is an overweight, overbearing woman who constantly cajoles those close to her. Her daughter Emma, also overweight and seemingly without focus in life, is not exactly someone you're gonna turn the TV on to see. One is tempted to close the book early on and look for more uplifting characters, but McMurtry hooks you, first with comedy, then tragedy.
I was surprised to see how much I grew to like Aurora by the end of the book, and have sympathy for Emma. There is a method to Aurora's rudeness. For example, being a widow, she has a handful of male suitors. At first I was wondering what all these older guys saw in her, as elderly guys, by sheer numbers, would have the pick of much more numerous older ladies. We see how she keeps them at arm's length, and as the book goes on, we see how they fit into their lives. When several of the suitors often wind up in the same room without too much bloodshed, we see that the method does work. Aurora has a role for each of them, and understands that most of them would not be able to keep up with her.
Same with Emma. If I were to meet this person at just about any part of her life, I probably would have little interest. But we do see the needs of this person. Yes, she probably made a big mistake with her choice of husband. But we see how she does want affection from a man who doesn't seem to have much to give, and thus turns back to her mother. While they both keep each other at arm's length, we can see the bond that holds them together until the end.
Terrific book, and and excellent translation to the screen.

Endearment for 'Terms'

When I first saw Shirley MacLaine as Aurora and Debra Winger as Emma I knew there was more to thair characters then just fun loving and tears. I picked up the novel 'Terms of Endearment' and finished it in two days, it made me laugh, wonder, and cry. The book surpasses the movie by FAR which is remarkable because the movie is fantastic (and has the 1982 Best Picture Oscar). I enjoyed every minute of this delightful and heartmelting book. The friends and characters that come along in the book are hilarious and touching. The General is smooth talking and Rosie and Verne are just as the title, endearing.
Must read this one!

Brilliant and enchanting!

I simply fell in love with this book. It is my all time favorite book. It is full of rich characters including Aurora Greenway, an eccentric, overbearing and somewhat annoying woman that you just have to love. Aurora's scenes with her suitors are so humorous that you are compeled to laugh out loud. This is a must read for those who enjoy books written from the heart.

Not good...

So, I have been reading a lot of good books lately; unfortunately, this was not one of them. I checked this one out from the library thinking that this would be a decent book about a lady who has two equally awesome guys vying for her attention. Of course, we'd expect her to be beautiful, but if I never hear about how her clothes made her so irresistible or rounded her curves or how guys couldn't help but look at her again, it would be too soon. Additionally, one of the guys was married, which would have taken him off of my radar the moment I knew (which was 'from the beginning' for the lead character). Instead, she kept going and (of course) he was in a loveless marriage and was leaving his wife and blah blah blah. Morals are morals and these folks didn't have any. The language was foul in some places, and I could have done without the sex scenes. It was also pretty slow, which required me to skip over some parts because they just didn't seem to help the story. Additionally, the going back and forth between the characters' thoughts/POV while in conversation and in and out of the present scene to past scenes was a bit annoying - not confusing, though. I caught on to the writer's style pretty quickly. Finally, race.... race race race. I understand that this book is a little older, so I can let the hangups the leading lady and her friends had on her dating the white guy slide.

All in all, I'm just not a fan of this book and hope that the author got better as she continued to write. But think I am just going to go back to my cleaner novels where the characters are at least available to date the leading lady.

Awesome book

This book was well written: good storytelling and story writing. I didn't want to put it down that's how awesome it was. I absolutely enjoyed it. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to read a good book.
