Letter To A Vegetarian Nation: We Need Livestock For Sustainable Food Production And Environmental Restoration, by Sheldon Frith

The debate about animal agriculture will never be the same again.

Sorting out whether livestock and meat are good or bad, among the thousands of contradictory opinions, can be an overwhelming task. This book makes it easy.

"I strongly recommend "Letter to a Vegetarian Nation" to everyone concerned with global mounting biodiversity loss, poverty, social breakdown and violence resulting from land degradation blamed on livestock. Sheldon points out unarguably that it is our reductionist management to blame, and not the innocent animals caught in the crossfire. Livestock are simply tools, and only a poor workman blames his tools! The needed healing can begin as soon as the public recognizes this."
-Allan Savory, founder of Holistic Management

“Letter To A Vegetarian Nation” is a meticulously researched and thoroughly logical analysis of why livestock are actually essential for sustainable food production and environmental restoration. No matter how much we might like to live in a world without livestock and meat eating, this book proves that it is simply not possible. The arguments in this book could not have been made convincingly in the past, but new information has come to light in recent years which changes everything. Unraveling the web of issues and arguments surrounding veganism and vegetarianism becomes much easier after reading this book.

Inspiring positive solutions
By cmjustice
This was a great inspiring read, filled with sensible solutions for sequestering carbon and restoring equilibrium to our ailing ecosystems. It is well researched and presented without the usual hyperbole and drama often found in the “latest answer” to the challenges we face. Provides excellent, rational arguments refuting the prevailing dogma from the vegetarian/vegan proponents with numerous historical and current examples. Quite accessible writing style, short illustrated chapters backed up with reference links, tables and photographs. Repetitive in places he emphasizes his suggested solutions with prescriptive links, a comprehensive glossary and a benevolent, never condescending attitude.
This book was offered in exchange for my opinion/review, assessment and more than lives up to my expectations for a way forward into a more sustainable, solution driven future. As a practicing student of permaculture, retired small holding farmer I believe with this knowledge we can recreate manageable harmony with Gaia’s ecosystems by following this pattern,. Recommended for anyone working the land, growing food and concerned about the future.

Regenerating land at speed and at scale
By Amazon Customer
This is a subject I have bumping into and scratching the surface of for a few years, but now here is the succinct summary. It comes with an abundance of links to articles and supportive material, more than enough to answer any questions you might have about "Why We Need Livestock For Sustainable Food Production And Environmental Restoration". No matter what views you hold on domestic animals and where or if they fit in a human diet, this book is helping to make it clear that animals belong in this world and that with their help we can regenerate land at speed and at scale. Full of hope and possibility.

I loved this book
By Carmine Leo
I loved this book. While most vegans and vegetarians will have trouble with it because the practices explained and demonstrated will not fit with their ideology, the reality is that there are tens of thousands of farmers and ranchers world-wide already proving that holistic management techniques are elegant and powerful processes that really work.

The only process we know of that is both sufficiently low-cost and sufficiently low-tech to be implemented worldwide - that is capable of reversing the climate trend - is holistic management, including rotational grazing. Our pattern of mono-cropping plants is a war against the soil and all other life forms, equivalant to the worst kind of biotic cleansing. We need to stop.

If you want to heal the land, sequester massive amounts of carbon, keep water in the soil, and regenerate complex biomes with their full complement of native plants and animals then you will need to do it with millions of grazers.

If we repurposed 75 percent of the world's trashed cropland and restored it from agriculture back to functioning prairies with their full animal cohorts, we could accomplish that within fifteen years. We would then sequester all the carbon released since the beginning of the industrial age and end the global warming threat within 20 to 40 years. As Lierre Keith says, "...the planet wants to be grassland and forest. It does not want to be an agricultural mono-crop. We just need to get out of the way."

Mr. Frith's wonderful work contains ample links to the research and the supporting science, as well as many before-and-after photos. Anyone looking to heal their local landscape would be well advised to start here. Thanks for doing this work Sheldon.
